Quick (over 160bhp), reliable car under 8k, preferably low tax!

I have about 8.5k but would be looking to spend a bit less if possible, looking for a quick reliable car. Max engine size about 2.0L, been looking at the likes of civic type r's, golf gti's, etc, anyone got any other suggestions? Looking to keep it for a few years too so preferably 110k miles or less!

Checked insurance and 710 tax on GTIs is ok, anything over that is a bit too much!

impreza or an evo would be much faster than the above, same tax just hard to find a good one

For that money and reliability being important you'd get a nice type r for 8k or less. The evo/impreza route is fine too but maintenance costs are higher and fuel consumption is considerably higher in comparison. All depends what you want and your style of driving really. Type rs need to driven hard to get the best out of them whilst the evo/impreza have more bottom end grunt (torque). Have you considered a diesel hot hatch? Just throwing it out there.

Maintenance isnt too bad on an impreza sti. Had one for 8 years fuel consumption is another thing though. Sold it last year and every day I miss it.
