The ol' btw scheme thread, and indeed the forum en generale, is quite "entry level ROAD bike" biased. So I thought I'd start a thread on what the best bang for buck mountain bike there is out there, for a Faaaaahsin Paaaand :)

As usual I think canyone set the bench mark for spec and price. The Grand Canyon AL 6.9 looks like a serious bike for 999 euro. - With Canyon GmbH now listed as an official supplier on the government scheme suppliers list, they're a serious contender for my tax-free dollar. The more I look around the more I come back to the canyon.

Does any other manufacturer offer similar spec for that money? I was out at cyclesuperstore looking at a lapierre pro race 329 which I think would be comparable, but it's priced at 1349!

Buying a mountain bike is like making love to a beautiful woman.........seriously, what are you going to use the bike for ?

I am waiting on a Lapierre Raid 329, which I think was around ₡700, the rest of the grand being spent on locks, lights, helmet etc. Can't wait to get my hands on it, been way too long since I cycled...

Why for cycling to work, your Honour! I just have to get a job the other side of a nearby mountain

Radon seem to offer the best bang for your buck. They only seem to be available from bikediscount.de so I'd doubt you'd get them on the BTW scheme. This is the one I was thinking of getting before I messed up my foot so it's on the back burner for a while at least.

650b, rockshox Reba fork, xt all round bar the front derailleur, cassette and chain which are deore. I couldn't find anything better at the 1k mark and plenty far worse so it's a bargain in my book. Just a pity it's a no go for me now.

They're a German company. I found them on another site. They arent as well known as canyon but I've read plenty of good things about them.

Edit: Thought you were asking about then not recommending them. Great minds think alike. :D

And would it require a lot of downhill ?, general trail riding ? a bit o' commuting ? bit more info would help recommendations.......

General trail riding. Tick Knock, He'll fire, Ballyhoura a bit, as well, and primarily for accompanying my young girls off road.
I like the endurance cross country stuff best. Rather than some mates who think 45 seconds of downhill followed by 25 minutes talking about it is a days biking :).

I want a 29er simply cos they look really cool. I fancy one of those single front ring- ten at the back set ups too. I know the sram one is mad dear but I rode a Marin in Bikeparkireland which had a Shimano version. Really flexible and gotta lighter be and simpler than multi- front chairings.

Can't beat Canyon's and the Grand Canyon AL 6.9, is a cracker at the price.

How close could I get to that spec for price while boosting the local economy do you reckon? Rather than sending my hard earned euros to our financial overlords. :)
I'd be willing to take a spec hit or pay a premium, but without taking the p1ss either like.

Buy the Canyon/Radon and spend the difference in a restaurant/bar. The catering industry is the just about best transmission channel for redistributive spending as it is incredibly labour intensive and employs staff on near minimum wage and the VAT rate is lower so less money goes to the govt.

Prostitution is possibly even better but has nasty/expensive side effects.

Don't suppose you know if this means Canyon are now discounting the German Vat rate on company purchases from Ireland?

Asked the same question two weeks ago myself.

Pretty much set on the Cube ltd pro @€;1049 its pretty similar spec to the canyon few bits of the group are better. Canyon is a bit lighter on paper don't know how much of that is down to wheels or frame. The crossone wheels on the canyon don't have great reviews.

That Radon is savage value nearly every bit of the groupset is a step up from the cube. Don't know if I can swing online with work and really my preference is to support my LBS so hence I'm pretty much set on the cube.

What's your Lbs? Cyclesuperstore had some 1000 euro cube acids but the paint jobs were too acid trippy for me.

Buckleys in Athlone. Fitzcycles had the best listing of prices for 2015 cubes but the MTB link is broken at the minute.

Thought cyclesuperstore were getting out of cube they had no 2015 models when I was looking a few weeks ago. Actually really like that Cube Acid but the Ltd pro is well worth the extra 100 the rockshox reba fork from what I've read is much better.

This is serious value at e799 if you are ok with 26" wheels and a 20" frame.

    http://www.bike-discount.de/en/buy/radon-zr-team-26-8.0-se-128347/wg_id-116

I have the 22" frame and zero complaints other than the rear hub being a wee bit loud when free wheeling. Went with 26" wheels as I use it for overseas touring and 26" wheels are more common in foreign climes.
