    Hi Lads,

I noticed an article on the BBC Sport website about the 10 fights they'd like to see this year.

    http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/boxing/30612888

Andy Lee v Saunders was one of the fights. But i'm amazed to see they referenced Andy as London Born and the first Traveller to win a world title.

Is this true or a typical case of them next door trying to belittle us..

Nothing untrue there to the best of my knowledge. The BBC being the BBC will mention he is born in London while he is being successful.

Michael Gomez won a WBU world title but that hardly counts.

Born in London to Irish parents, started boxing at the famous Repton club there.
Moved to Ireland at 14, where he started boxing for St Francis in Limerick.
At age 19 he won a Bronze at the European Championships, and shortly after turning 20 he won Silver at the EU's and reached the round of 16 at the 2004 Olympics. He beat Anfredo Angulo in the first round and controversially lost to Hassan N'Dam in the round of 16 on countback (incorrectly imo).

A little over a year after the Olympics Andy signed a professional contract with Emmanuel Steward as both his manager and trainer, and started living with Emmanuel at his home in Detroit. Most people who read this forum will know the rest from there.

As for where he was born, the long answer is this: Andy was born in the 80's, at a time when there was a huge amount of emigration from Ireland. Many of these people eventually returned home, and Irish people being born in England/USA is a lot more common than you think, as a guy born in the 80's I'd say nearly half my (close) Irish friends were born in England. You'll probably get something similar in the future, only you'll notice a lot more Irish people born in Australia and Canada too.

The short answer has already been given: 'Who cares!'
