I'm looking at this 2015 'Giant ATX 27.5 2' and I think its an OK spec for the dosh. At €445 what do you think?
I did look at the 2015 Carrera Vengeance in Halfords which has pretty much identical spec but then I saw this for an extra €35 over the Vengeance and its a more reputable brand I guess and I don't have to deal with little iffy young fellas who know sweet f all about bikes in Halfords if something goes wrong.

Yes just a beginner and for getting to work and back. Light trail use at most... My work is 5kms away so I'm not caught up on a hybrid. I want a MTB but is this a decent bike?

Giant make very good bikes and are well priced. Availability can be an issue but I would choose giant for the aftersales. Halfords could be hit or miss....

I don't mean to generalise, but despite the good spec for the money, I will never buy another Carrera. Rear drop out snapped when I braked (due to bad design) coming down a hill and I was very lucky not to go under a car.

Edit: To be fair to Halfords, they gave a full refund with no questions asked, very knowledgeable staff there who understood my problem too.

    Hi there,
first of all I am a road bike user, commuting and doing spins. Love cycling and of course this can be addictive, buying new and better components ect ect..
My advice for you is simple, as a beginner, I would not buy a new bike. I would go for a second hand bike for around half of the price, I would take it to the local bike shop, have a service and I would use it until it falls apart. After couple of hundreds of miles I would think to buy something like that.
Regarding this particular bike... If you can use the cycle to work scheme, I would go for the Talon/Boardman.
The real question is how much do you need/can/want to spend...There is a good comparison on the bikeradar for under 500, under 1000 that could give you an idea, what to look for.
Good luck for your choice, and be safe on the road.
    Regards.

It's a way to get into mtb'n I suppose but it is pretty entry stuff. The front fork wudnt handle much more than a pothole in the road IMO. Cheap coilspung forks can be horrible. For that price ur not goin to get a trail blazer brand new. My advice wud be either,
    1. Check the second hand market, can pic up some great speced bikes for good money
    2. Wait till u hav a limitless more spondulix to spend
    3. Bike to work scheme

I went into the Giant Store in Dublin yesturday and they didn't have the ATX I wanted in stock so I will have to look at another store that stock Giant bikes. Your man there didn't seem to know much at the bike either but said he could get it in in two weeks if I left a deposit. Haven't even sat on the ATX 27.5 2 to decide If its what I wanted so I wasn't leaving a deposit on anything.

Is there a Trek or a Specialized or similar that anyone would reccommend before settling on the Giant?

I'm not gonna bother with the Carrera in Halfords anymore to be honest. Its a nice machine for the money but Im passing for a better known brand.

If the Giant Store doesn't plan to carry a "stock" model I'd be surprised if any other bike shop does!

They had the next model up which is out of my price range. A good few other stores are listing the model Im after as in stock. Unfortunately being Sunday LBS are closed where I am so I'll see what I can do Monday.

I have seen the bike on marreybikes.com. They are in Mayo but claim free delivery anywhere in Ireland. The bike is €378 with them as opposed to €445 everywhere else. Anyone dealt with this crowd before? Are they a LBS type place or what are they?

    Cheers
