Hi i have just gotten engaged and as we want to get married this year we really need to get planning!
I have never had to help someone plan a wedding so i have no idea what's involved! Can anyone please recommend any planner books and or journals?
I also plan to keep a scrapbook to look back on in the future if anyone is doing the same would love to hear from you. I want to be a diy bride as much as possible too but am in no way an artsy person! Is there any really good books or resources that other diy brides can reccomend? There is so much online, it's hard to know which is the best one!!

If you want to get married this year, my main bit of advice is to find a location ASAP. Lots of places will already be booked out, a year in advance appears to be the minimum if you have a specific date in mind.

Other than that, congrats and all the best!

Thanks for your reply. Yes everyone keeps saying that!! We are getting onto the venues this week so fingers crossed we will be able to find a lovely place asap!!!

Hello Again!! You are defiantly right there are way too many sites out there telling you want to do and what not to do..

I think first steps first don't go for one of the planning books go get yerselfs a nice diary that ye can fill out. There was one good book Champagne Wedding on a Bucks Fizz Budget, just gives you a heads up on things.

Start of by both of ye making a list of what ye would like from the big day (this will change tri fold aswell) at least to get an idea of what ye a looking for... Budget then, how many and how much do ye think, then work off the locations from there..

Websites I thought were good were well here, Mrs to Be and One fab day..

Even location is a pain, but once ye have decided what kind of day ye would like then ye are half way there...

Be carefull with hotels and places that do come across a bit too good to be true.. Places have hidden charges for everything, holding the ceremony there, having a late night bar - some if you opt not to pay for the extension, then will not let you use the residence bar.. There are lots of sneaky things.

With decorations and all that, you can get so carried away even when you aren't, when you look and say well now this is still costing money to buy so you aren't saving..Look around at things you can use for free. you can really go on forever about stuff so me thinks ye should make yer lists and work from there

All good advice here, one thing I'll say is if you are planning on having the wedding in 2015, don't be over ambitious with the DIY, it can take a lot of time, money and stress for details nobody will take much notice of. I did an awful lot but our wedding was 2 yrs in the planning.

Don't forget you need to register your intent to marry with the HSE, best to do it as soon as you have venue and ceremony booked.

I second tge recommendation for one fab day. They had a series of planning posts up which were a great place to start. Also a great checklist and they have a DIY section. Printables for invites from pinterest will save you time on the DIY side.

Its totally doable to get married this year. You may have to go mid week for availability in some better venues but there's still Fridays left we found quite late. Dresses you need typical 6 months order time but you can fet some off the shelf eg samples or in the likes of monsoon.

best of luck. Fun year ahead

This is a handy spot also http://www.todaysbride.com/Invitations-Stationery.aspx for all the info on invites..

I cannot find it now but there is a PDF there also about To Invite or Not. Sounds silly but it is actually quite handy, was only looking at it last night and thinking about family invites and it makes it easier..
