I saw a laptop in Tesco. i think it is an ASUS x550
    1TB hard drive
    6GB RAM
    Win 8 64 bit
    Intel celeron processor 1007U
    399 euro

They advertise it as top specs or high specs. Is it? What sort of a processor is that?

It's nothing special that's for sure.

It is good RAM and Hd but the processor does not seem top spec to me. i thought celeron was pre pentium. is there an updated celeron?

All the intel CPU's are up to date. As you progress through the range they will become smarter, use less power, and produce less heat. IMHO an Intel Core i3 2nd or 3rd gen is perfect. There are quite a few laptops now with a pentium quad. Not as refined as i3 but can do pretty much all the same things, should be cheaper

You're not serious are you? That thing would take a couple of mins to open a browser, the most gaming it can handle is free cell. You can get similar laptops for €250.

I've seen that type of thing before, it's insane really.

That's far to expensive for that spec.

The Celeron branded chips are Intel's low spec brand. You wouldn't be able to do more than basic web browsing and word docs on that pc.

The Pentium Quads aren't i3/i5/i7 arch based like they used to be, they're atom based - their performance is pretty poor generally speaking, nowhere near an i3 level.

They are the lowest end of chips available really, along with some of AMD's E1 type CPU's.

The processor in this laptop isn't brilliant but it's not bad either, it is one of the 'proper' celeron/Pentium's that are based on the same tech as the faster i3/i5/i7. But you can get better laptops for 399.
