Freeview is nothing to do with satellite dishes: it's the UK terrestrial broadcast service, their equivalent of Saorview. If your aerial is picking up any Freeview services, they should have been found during the Saorview scan.

If the TV has a satellite tuner, & you have a suitable dish, it should find the satellite channels regardless of country setting. If it's a Freesat branded TV, it will need to be set to UK to avail of Freesat features.

Make & model of the TV would be a help.

its a jvc telly and its branded freeview so im assuming its got a built in satalite decoder i connected it to existing sky dish and got no signal, i might try direct line to dish see if that does any thing. saorview working perfect. PS tv not branded saorview but "irish digital ready" instead

Freeview as pointed out above is nothing to do with satellite - it is UK DTT service. Freesat is the branded free satellite service for these islands.

so whats the solution just pick up an old sky box or similar. im not that up to speed but i take it that freeview is pointless in ireland

it depends where you are located, if near border regions ie the north or wales you can get freeview with a good aerial. If you are not get a Humax Freesat PVR, hook it up to a sat dish , its a one off cost but you get all the BBC, ITV, CH4,CH5 and can record them.

Freeview can be got in certain parts of Ireland with the correct aerial setup. If you wish to connect your tv to a dish for the UK channels then the TV must also have a satellite tuner in it or yes you could use an old sky box or any FTA satellite/Freesat box

As pointed out above, Freeview is the name of the UK's digital terrestrial tv service, which is broadcast via transmitters and receivable via the correct aerial set up.

A lot of Freeview stations are also broadcast via satellite and are receivable with a correctly aligned satellite dish and satellite receiver. You can use a generic Free To Air satellite receiver or a Freesat branded one which will organize the channels for you and give you a 7 day programme guide.

The channels do vary depending on which method you use so I suggest you have a look at http://www.freeview.co.uk/whats-on/channels & http://www.freesat.co.uk/channels

Does the TV have a separate screw-on connection for the dish? (Maybe labeled 'LNB-in'.)

Or did you just change the connector on the end of the dish cable & connect it to the same input used for the Saorview aerial?

Don't confuse freesat (dish) with freeview (aerial). If you had been getting UK tv through aerial, this may still be possible if your aerial is set up correctly, you may need two aerials, one for Irish, one for UK. You have a sky dish, if you have standard receiver connected remove sub card and you can get free to air, if dish set up correctly.
My inlaws are in Wicklow town, no problem with freeview, I am in Bray, no freeview. Eastcoast does not always equal freeview, if you could get UK tv previously, it may still be possible.

    Freeview doesn't need a card.

The TV obviously doesn't have a satellite tuner then. Might be worth getting your aerial looked at, depending exactly where you are. More than likely you'd be better off just getting a satellite receiver to connect to your dish.

If you happen to be travelling up north, here's an example of a decently priced Freesat branded receiver, that will provide a proper 7-day programme guide, & automatically retune when channels change frequency.

Bear in mind though, that basic Freesat receivers offer no recording facility: you need to spend a good bit more on a 'proper' PVR, with twin-tuner & integral HDD. Cheap non-Freesat receivers OTOH, will usually allow connection of a USB storage device for recording purposes, but will only have now-&-next programme info, & no automatic retune.
