Traffic light AND Stop sign???

OK, so I was taking a right turn on Dodsborough Road in Lucan and came upon a strange sight at the traffic lights. As well as the regular traffic light, there was also a stop sign. What is the deal with how to legally proceed in this case? From what I can gather, even if I have a green light, legally I have to come to a complete stop at the stop line (I always come to a complete stop at the stop line when a stop sign is present, no matter how inconvenient it may be) before proceeding which seems bizarre.
I would imagine the stop sign was there before and then traffic lights were installed at a later date. If this is the case, how the hell has the council or road authority or whoever managed to allow this setup to remain in place. I'm not familiar with the area but the traffic lights look like they've been there for years.

Well as I mentioned, it's not a road I would travel on and I also made a presumption that this was an incorrect set-up, hence the reason for posting here in the first place.

I'm waiting for feedback from other people to see if they would be in agreement or disagreement before approaching the council. Just because I think it's wrong does not mean it is however although you don't specifically agree with me that it's an incorrect set-up, you do kinda say it is, in a roundabout kind of way....excuse the pun :D

oh it seems definately to be wrong.

I'd agree - that looks completely incorrect.

The stop sign shouldn't be there if the junction is fully signalled.

Loads of those in Europe. It means that when the lights are not working you need to stop before proceeding. The sign can be ignored when the lights are working.

That junction only got lights a few years ago -- all local authorities seemed to go on a spree at the same time. I think the Stop sign pre-dates the lights.

Ditto Australia. Tells you who has to stop when/if lights are out (hence three black circles). Good idea:

AUSTRALIAN ROAD RULES - REG 63

Which part of our law say that you can ignore a Stop sign?

It gets worse. Driving into Trim yesterday, I was approaching a standard 4 way traffic signalised junction. It's been a few months since I last passed through it but there is a new addition.... STOP is now painted on the ground just before the stop line. As mentioned just before me
, it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere in the road traffic regulations that stop signs can be ignored.

I see your traffic light and stop sign and raise you pedestrian lights and a pedestrian crossing... on what is private land.

The stop sign is positioned beyond the traffic lights and has no stop line associated with it. There is a very faded stop line which seems to have been replaced by the traffic lights.

What is the legal position of a stop sign without a stop line?

Normally, if there's no line, you must stop at the sign.

In fairness to UCHG they have more "real" Zebra crossings on the UCHG campus than in the whole of Galway City.
