Open Prizes

    What are your thoughts?

Club runs an open, weather isnt great. Very low numbers play. Even lower numbers return a card. Should the club give out a prize or is it fair enough for them to say tough, not enough people played so no prizes will be given out.

Have to give something. Fair enough for it to be small but discourteous to give nothing.

If you run an open competition you must have a 1st prize regardless of numbers, otherwise what's the point?.

For low numbers in open competitions we normally give green fee vouchers for a two or fourball

If there's no prize, there's no competition as was advertised. Which means money back is an inevitability should anyone choose to go down that route. Better off putting up 1st prize at least.

Agreed you have to give something when a competition is advertised, alternatively you could cancel the competition and return the green fees paid if the numbers don't meet expectations.

With regards to open competitions in general I think all prizes should be in the form of GUI vouchers posted out to the winners with the value determined by the club. I play a good few open competitions and this year finally managed to win a 2nd place prize. It's one thing travelling 40 mins each way to play a round of golf but quite another to make that same trip of another evening for the prize giving and yet again having to return to try an exchange the prize in a small and poorly stocked pro shop.

Also I don't value green fee vouchers as an acceptable prize for an open competition. Most of the time I play open competitions as a means of playing a qualifying competition on an away course so returning to use the prize to play green fees isn't exactly exciting not to mention it doesn't cost the club anything.

I happened to click one day last year at an Open and won the thing, very surprised and happy with my round, it was quite busy and I remember counting up to 60odd entrants that had signed in the book for the day's competition and there was plenty of daylight it being a gorgeous day and folk behind us so I'd say at least another 30 could have entered.
They phoned me and offered me either a 2ball or GUI voucher for €25 for first prize, I took the €25 GUI and after a number of calls on my behalf I actually ended up with a €25 gift card for a golf shop nowhere near me and about a month to expiry.
So, on foot of probably the guts of a grand in entrance fees they offered €25 first prize, most folk I mentioned this to in passing over the next fee weeks were shocked.
What I took from it was ignore prizes, play to play and be happy to be out.

Wow that is pathetic and especially since it probably cost that or near it in entrance fees. There has to be give and take and a club taking all around them like that won't get repeat custom and positive word of mouth advertising.
Sure you can take from it not to play for prizes but prizes are the reward for that expectional game and since most golfers might only get to win a single prize once every year or two it's important for it to be meaningful and in proportion to the entrance fee and not just a slap in the face as your nearly expired €25 voucher was. If there are no prizes or prizes of any value then what's the entrance fee for. I'd be inclined to name the club above as it's certainly a place I'd choose to avoid with all the competition elsewhere.
