We have built a new house retaining some walls of a old house and the rooms which has these walls has a musty smell. Is this normal or could it be that not enough damp proofing on walls?

Rising damp? Or a leak of some kind
Is the vent working in the room?
stagnant air condensing on a cold surface behind furniture?

Did you use an Engineer at any point during the build, by any chance?

Get a damp meter and find the source, you'll get one for 50€
