Hey, quick question. I'm recently married, as of last month and the Wife doesn't work at the moment. I need to get on to the local tax office about transferral of her credits, as I understand it to the tune of €1650.

What I'm wondering is, do we need to have a joint assessment and I am assuming that I will have to produce the marriage as proof of marriage. Is there any other credits I can claim as she is my dependent until she finds work?

If you havent done it all ready complete an assessable spouse election form (you will get it on the revenue website) and send it to your local tax office. Tick the box that you want all the credits.

If you have young children theres a home carers tax credit. There is nothing else that I can think of that you can claim.

You can also claim the increase standard rate cut off point (limit of earnings taxed at 20%). In 2014 a single person could earn 32,800 and be taxed at 20% whereas the sole earner in a marriage could earn 41,800 and be taxed at 20%. These bands have increased slightly for 2014, on phone so can't link but you will find it on Revenue's website.
