In keeping with the 'will-you-be-watching-Taffin/Back-to-the-Future' Xmas/NY movie thing I'd like to know if AH are watching this great comedy.

I'm partying in my living room to Jools Holland.

Airplane just reminds people of 2014...

Is this actually meant to be funny or just one of those films you have to find funny for the sake of it?

I'm watching Trading Places - one of the best Xmas/NYE films ever made!

I could have sworn that RTE/RTE2 showed Airplane last New Year's Night too. But it's a classic comedy so what there to complain about :)

    Its pure class!

I can see its influence all over the Simpsons and Family Guy!

Neither, it's simply a very funny film.

    I can make a hat, a brooch, a pterodactyl...

I find it genuinely hilarious. Silly humour so maybe not everyone's cup of (black) coffee, but also some very clever stuff. Even the dated bits are funny when you put them in the context of their time.

    What an absolute classic !

    KRAMER
    Stand by, Striker.
    (to McCroskey)
The one hope we have is to build this man up. I've got to give him all the
    confidence I can.
    (into microphone)
All right, Striker, have you ever flown a
    multi-engine plane before?

    STRIKER (v.o.)
    No. Never.

    KRAMER
    Shit!

    INT. COCKPIT - NIGHT

Striker over hears conversation on radio.

    KRAMER (v.o.)
This is a goddamn waste of time. There's
no way he can land this plane! Route 'em
into Lake Michigan and at least avoid
    killing innocent people!

Plus some of the greatest visual jokes in comedy films.

It's based off a bad 50s movie and watching them at the same time makes it even funnier!!

    Nope, not racist at all.
It just pokes fun at the cultural disparity and contradicts what the audience is expecting.
Besides, the actors in the piece were part of the creation process.
And the actress was Barbara Billingsley , well know as the mom in Leave it to Beaver and so to see her play the role was an equal half of the scenes comic effect, at least in the US.

The life of everyone on board depends upon just one thing: finding someone back there who can not only fly this plane, but who didn't have fish for dinner.

There was an entire thread about the build up to it and subsequent intellectual analysis of its virtues!

I hadn't realised its genius before then.

I just want to tell you both good luck we're all counting on you.

Airplane 2 is a disappointment though.

Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked... in the head... with an iron boot? Of course you don't, no one does. It never happens. Sorry, Ted, that's a dumb question... skip that.

    - I can't tell.

    - You can tell me, I'm a doctor.

    - No, I mean I'm not sure.

    - Well can't you take a guess?

    - Not for another two hours.
