Night time

I live in wicklow on the coast..For the last half hour I've been listening to some type of bird I presume..on some nearby roofs..whistley shrill short.mournful type of sound.nothing I've ever heard before..sorry for terrible description. .anybody any ideas?

You think? I've never heard black birds at night..I went in and got wife to listen and her first reaction was a raptor calling..but it was very dark..

From your description it sounds like a Blackbird to me. Robins and Blackbirds are the two main species you'd probably hear at night (when theres street lighting etc around), and your description sounds a bit more blackbird-y than robin-y!

If you click that link theres a clip of their call, but check youtube too - it can be a bit slower and more 'mournful' than that in the RSPB clip.
