Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lost Emails

My Samsung Galaxy Tab 3's Email app has lost my old Gmails. The only ones that show are new mail. When I check mail from gmail.com, I can see all my old and new email. Why is this?

You have to 'flick up' in the app to re-downloaded them all - shown by my pensioner mum
