Car comes along the motorway behind me at 6am today - I'm thinking by the dull headlights that it's going to be an oldish car but am surprised that its an 11 D Audi A3. The Audi slows down for an upcoming exit and I get alongside to compare the 'footprint' of the beam with my 09 model - hers is about 20 ft shorter than mine so I assume that she had the headlight adjustment set to 4passengers meaning the beam was a lot shorter with only the driver in board. Between the Daytime lights coming on without the tail lights and this 'short beam' adjustment, perhaps customers need more education before leaving the showroom ???

    Could be base spec DRLs?

Probably the adjustment though as you say.

I was thinking the same, some DRLs are actually crazy bright, and enough to illuminate the road somewhat when it's dark.

It is possible that the headlights were not switched on at all and what you were seeing was the DRLs. DRLs are only on the front of cars for a reason, to be seen by road users ahead, not behind. Dozy clown driver was probably half asleep at that time of the morning.
