Probably moving quite close to st Margarets village in the next few months. Have only played golf a handful of times but have been toying with the idea of taking it up. Know both corrstown and St. Margarets are close to each other and 10mins to where i will end up living. Any significant differences between the two? both have driving ranges + golf pros for lessons etc?

Two good courses. Margarets the better of the two in my opinion but corrstown has the benefit of 27 holes which should make getting out easier at busy times. If your only taking up the game I would consider Hollystown too, only up the road from them and has 27 holes too but is cheaper than both.

No issue getting out in St. Margaret's at all ;)

John Kelly is the pro, he'll look after you. Drop me a pm if you need a member for the refferal discount.

Strangely enough there were 2 pros at the club - one was let go and John Kelly is staying and taking a more active role.

I was a member in St. Margarets for a year a couple of years back and played Corrstown a few times.

From my experience, Corrstown has a really nice course, the benefit of 27 holes and day to day there'd be more going in the clubhouse. Not sure what, if any, the practice facilities were like.

St. Margarets also has a great course (during my time there it became one of my absolute favourite courses, even though it supposedly was not in great condition), a driving range, 18 hole practice putting green, chipping green and short game practice area (as in 150 yard+ approach shots to a small green) and the course was usually fairly quite so no trouble getting out and the staff were very accommodating.

The clubhouse staff is probably what gave St. Margarets the edge for me when deciding where to join and hopefully now with the investment being put in there'll be a bit more life in the clubhouse on a regular basis.

And although I never got lessons from John Kelly, some of the other members raved about him. I know of some who more than halved their handicap in a matter of months with his help.

I hope to rejoin St. Margarets some day even though I don't live in the area anymore but I'm not too far away so I think it'd be worth traveling.

That's Gary gone then? I knew him from Hollywood Lakes and met him at St Margarets on a society outing last summer. He's a real gent and I hope he gets sorted soon.

    The following might help:

    Corrstown

Membership fee is now €1314 and can be paid by Direct Debit monthly which is a huge advantage. So if you don't like it after a couple of months you can then move to St Margarets.

No issue with the clubhouse and practice area includes putting green, chipping green and short iron area with nets for driving. It needs improving but its ok. The big advantage is the actual club, 540 members, 27 hole complex which is kept up to a very good standard and a very active club in inter-club comps etc. So its a good members club. Another advantage is you actually get a share in the club, so if the club was sold in the future you get a percentage of the funds (way into the future I hope if ever). The club as 180 h. Pat the pro also provides lessons.

You'll always get out in both clubs at any time, Corrstown due to having 27 holes, St Margarets due to less members but they are working hard on increasing their numbers but still wouldn't expect this to be a issue.

Golf societies are very common at the weekend at Corrstown from 1pm onwards and they play the spare 9 and then the first 9 around 3pm etc, so doesn't cause a major issue with tee slots.

    St Margarets

Great course (some really nice holes) but needs investment, this is meant to happen this year. I'm not sure what the actual membership numbers are but its a lot lower then Corrstown. I was told a normal comp only gets 60-80 entries compared to Corrstown having a 150+ and majors would easily have 250 to 300 in Corrstown.

John Kelly is excellent for coaching and the practice areas are very good.

The fee is a bit higher then Corrstowns but you can get discounts through current members.

Not sure what the story is with Golf Societies at weekends filling tee time slots.

    Summary:

I'm currently a member of Corrsown and have actually look at joining St Margarets for a change of scene etc, but the advantage of 27 holes and the personal connection with the club, I.e. friends and interclub etc. i decided to stay with Corrstown, but tough choice to be honest. If St Margarets was back to its best like 10 years ago, then it might be a different conversation.

Hope the above helps and doesn't upset any members from either club.

Totally agree with this statement and Hollystown is great value for a newbie, but I hate the course and it gets very wet in some parts.

Make sure to let them know you're trying to decide which one to join, so you'll get the royal treatment...not that you wouldn't anyway.
