    Hi all,

Could anyone shed some light on where you can get lessons in Clare or Limerick? I'm fascinated by aviation and was promised a few lessons for Christmas. I understand there is a flying club in Coonagh.

Also if I were to go all the way and obtain a PPL, what would the overall costs be?

Coonagh is the only one I know of in Limerick/ Clare are! There is another one if not two in Galway, same in Cork!
Overall cost depends on person to person and how quick you progress, but the figure that gets thrown around for a PPL for the average person is around €5000 mark, between exams and flying time etc!

    €5000? Try a minimum of €10,000...

you want your school/club to be registered with IAA, here's the list - https://www.iaa.ie/registered-training-facilities

    not much options I'm afraid

as regards the cost, the cheapest lesson rate I've found in Ireland is 175 per hour, you need at least 45 for PPL(A), that means 7875,
then there's briefings that normally cost 35 to 50 eur per brief, you need some 13 of those (can't remember the exact count) , so that's another 500..
then there's books and stuff for another 500..
ground school should be in a range from 900 to 2000'ish
add a few bob for exams

so being completely foolishly optimistic we are talking about just over 10,000€
    and then there's medical - class 2 is 150 to 200 eur

now keep in mind, no one ever completes their PPL in just 45 hours, add a minimum 2 grand cushion and you'll have your ball park.

Now if you don't plan to go commercial, I suggest you try microlights. They have the same performance as most PPL(A) planes have, but they're much cheaper to run and you need a minimum of 30 (as opose to 45) hours to complete

don't let the price tag discourage you. It might sound a lot, but when spread across for number of months/years, it might be the best money you've ever spent!

There is also the Phoenix Flying group in Shannon. It costs a bit to join but have one of the cheapest flying rates.

EI-BPL from the Phoenix flying club had a new engine installed a few years back and now runs on JET A1. a much increased endurance, lower costs, however performance can be a bit sluggish especially when flying out of grass strips like Birr. plenty of runway at Shannon though!

Yes, having just completed a (3 axis )microlight licence I would agree E10000+ for a ppl. A microlight licence say e6000+. Modern microlights perform similar to many class A aircraft e.g. Cessna 150 and are cheaper to run and maintain and can many access farm strips round the country. It all depends on what you want to do when you get your licence. If you want to further your flying career and get say an instrument or commercial rating then go the normalClass A PPL route. Best of luck whatever route you take!

It cost me €12800 all in for PPL (A) and now im planning on doing the microlight crossover for affordability and hopefully buy my own 3 axis microlight something like XAIR would be great carry 2 and room for bags etc for weekends away etc, also run on mogas easy removal of wing for winter storage.

If I was starting again id just do PPL(M) and do it in northern Ireland or uk. For pure recreational flight microlights are unbeatable in my opinion.
