    Well all,
I've seen the insidemma piece on Tim Boetsch weigh cut in order to make weight and also saw recently John Jones saying he'll weigh in at 227 pounds come fight time.
I know he's a tall guy so maybe that weigh gain is not unusual for his size but would mma fighters typically put on 10 pounds between weigh in and fight time?

Ten pounds would be quite a small cut for anything but the smallest fighters.

Rumble Johnson used to cut 40 or 50 pounds to get down to welterweight.

I seriously doubt he cut 40-50 pounds. It would more than likely result in death.

He certainly lost 40-50 pounds but would prob cut closer to 20lbs, and lost the rest though diet and training.

People really need to realise the difference between a cut for a weigh in and shedding walking around weight

Perhaps you could educate the people then?

The weight they "put on" between weigh in and fight is water weight, you probably already know this.

But yes, I'd guess that 90% or more fighters cut weight for a fight, some cutting a lot and some not so much.

Even though it not good for your body, it's seen as almost foolish to fight in a weight class that represents what a fighter would weigh during the fight. A fighter puts them self at a disadvantage if they don't because everyone else is doing it.

I saw that clip, Jones is playing mind games. He tweeted a pic of himself weighing 218 a week ago. He posted a pic of himself weighing 217 weeks before the Texeira fight too. That's actually a small cut tbh.

The lower you go in class, the more weight the fighter tends to cut. When I say cut, I typically refer to the weight gained between weigh time and fight night. This generally varies from 10-20pounds but can be as high as 30 pounds in some cases.

As for how this is possible? Say you have to weigh in at 170. You weigh 200 7 days before weigh in. You diet really diligently. Cut out carbs.Increase salt intake and then cut ut out a 2 days before weigh in (salt retains water). Drink excess water (6 plus litres) every day. Cut water and salt consumption. Body keeps pissing despite reduced water intake. Break a sweat every night.

Last night/day. You have probably lost some fat in the last 2 weeka due to strict dieting. Sweat the resr of your weight out. It could be 15 pounds. Get in a sauna. Lie in a hot bath etc etc. Suck that water out of you. Weigh 170 for the few hours needed to weigh in. Weigh in. Rehydrate. Eat. Eat. Rehydrate. Eat. Wake up next day 190 pounds ~.

That's a very rough put together but you get the gist.

Shedding weight during camp involves losing fat when a fighter is overweight. Some fighters out on a lot of weight between fights, other little or none. It's not always down to laziness either as excess calories is benefits areas like strength certain training and injury recover.

Cutting weight refers to dropping water from about a week out. Virtually of the weight list this week is fat. And almost all of this weight will be put back on.

When people see Rumble Johnson ballooned up to 230lbs between fights and ask how did he ever cut to WW.
The answer is he didn't, not from there. He did cut a silly amount though.
