Buying green diesel in bulk

Seeing as oil has dropped 50% in 7 months. I am thinking of buying a larger green diesel tank to store diesel in bulk. Existing tank is 1.5 m3 which usually lasts about a year. Thinking of getting a 3 m3 tank. Who sells tanks other than carbery.

Was also thinking of using an old stainless steel tank. At a euro a gallon it would cost about the same as the plastic tank. Is it ok to use a SS tank which may have used acid and the likes for diesel seeing as it's not ok for plastic tanks.

Not so sure about the SS tank as condensation is more of a problem with steel tanks than plastic ones or so I was told. We have plastic tanks here only because the old steel ones got rusty over the years and replacement plastic ones were cheaper.

Isn't there an issue with diesel going off if it's not used/turned over often enough?

the cost of a new tank would by far off set the saving ? Also bigger tanks are more attractive to thieves! All the contractors I seen use metal tanks so I shouldn't think it's a problem but condensation would cause serious mechanical problems I imagine

difference i assume is that the diesel would not be in contractors tank for a long period

You're right. But you can add a fuel stabiliser to make it last up to a year I believe. It might offset the price savings by a bit I'd imagine.

This, along with security concerns is why I no longer fill the tank at home. I'm lucky in that the depot is 100 yards from me and they give me the bulk delivery price even though I'm buying off the pump. Usually, I'm buying somewhere between 300 and 500 litres at a time, depending on how empty the tractors are.

    consider two issues imo.
    1. security... is it good enough? big hit if stolen.
    2. locking in at an apparently good price today could be expensive next week.
advice: satisfy yourself with the futures
let us know your outcome either way

Thinking of plumbing a pump for convenient transfer of diesel from one tank to another. Any ideas of how I could do this?
