I am in the process of building a workshop/shed at the moment and am going to make a homemade turn table for a quite heavy van. Thinking of basing it on a tractor wheel type setup has anyone any info on the type of load a tractor wheel could take lying flat like this

A ten stud truck hub would be better. Dont think youd need a rim, just make the table to bolt on.

Just out of interest, whats it for?

I seen one in a Dublin apartment a few years back to allow the owner to drive into the garage, swing the car around and drive back out. It was a concrete pad and it was electronically driven but I thought it was a cool idea. Is yours along the same lines?

Always thought it would be a great way to store all the front loader attachments. Basically a manual turntable and you spin it around as to what you need. Maybe big enough to take a sheargrab, bucket and pallet forks.
Handy space saver in a shed.

Let us know how you get on with yours. Definitely something I'd be interested in seeing.

It's for turning my van in its own footprint inside in shed.very long drive to get to shed too far to reverse and this idea came to me the other day.

I have experience with industrial hydraulic driven turntables. Basically, we just tell the manufacturer the load and table speed and they suggest one from their range. The load, or 'moment of inertia' depends where the weight is in relation to the turn axis. A tonne weight directly on the turn axis would be a lot less than say a tonne at 5metres from the axis. Safety has to be considered too. You should be able to stop it safely, with an emergency stop for example.

You propably better off with a taper type bearing too. More suitable to axial loading like that.

I was thinking of manualy turning it for now with whatever leverage that takes and maybe attaching a motor later on but for now keeping it as simple as possible

The problem with turning it with by hand is, you need very low friction bearings and when you get it moving, how do you stop it?

Would basing it on a vehicle hub not be fairly easily turned.im guessing 2 tonnes roughly of a load directly on the centre of whatever suitable wheel.it should only need to turn 180 degrees so a crude braking device won't be hard to invent, what do you think

I'd say a hub would be about 300mm, then you'd need to concrete it in, 450mm or so. The table, maybe 6'' channel or RSJ.

You can get mats that you drive onto and you can push a car around on them. Allot of big garages use them in their showrooms.

You'd need a very smooth floor. Might be a cheaper option?
