How to use my boiler/central heating system?

Wondering if someone can help here, we recently purchased our first house. It's our first time living in a house with gas central heating, and we're still trying to figure out how the heating controls actually work!

We've just been using the control on the boiler to turn up the heating and the timer to get it to come on when we need it. Which seems to be working grand.

There however is also a thermostat? Surely that should be turning up the heating for us and controlling the level?

Can I heat water only or rads only or is it always both?

House is approx 15 years old if that makes any odds.

    Photos of the controls below.

Clock is a basic ON OFF for everything.
House will heat up to the temp. set on the wall thermostat.

Unless you have extra valves or switches for different areas and hot water.

I think that's a ferroli boiler. As soon as you can afford to, replace it. :)
On a serious note you seem to have basic heating controls. I'd say the thermostat on the wall either shuts off the boiler or closes a motorised valve in your Hotpress when it's satisfied. Whatever you set the stat to will be your room temperature. Start at 20 and see how it goes. Increase by 1 degree a time until you get a heat you like in the room.
