Sick leave while on maternity leave?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any experience of the following situation.
I gave birth to my baby in September of this year and for the first 12 weeks post delivery (baby will be 15 weeks tomorrow) I was rather unwell and ended up needing a small operation at the start of December to put things right.
My consultant wrote me a letter for work asking that I be given an extended period of maternity leave on foot of this.
So in order to get my sick leave (which would be paid in the normal course of things)added onto the 26 weeks maternity leave how do you do this? I was going to call into work after the Christmas holidays (I only got this letter on December 22nd at my follow up appointment) and show them the letter.

Has anyone had a similar situation and if so now did it work out? I'm very lucky in that I've only has a total of 4 sick days in my entire working life so have little experience of sick leave and all that business.

First of all, get and read a copy of the company leave policy. They may not pay sick leave, expecting you to claim that off social welfare instead. It may not be worth your while to do it...

My work does pay sick leave in full generally the same as they are doing for my maternity leave.
I was planning on taking the 16 weeks unpaid anyway so getting paid for 12 would be a bonus.

Afaik, in our place and we're ps so should have the same policy across ps, you only get time in lieu if you're sick while on unpaid leave. If we're sick while on official paid maternity leave we get nothing back.

I'm in the PS too it's probably the same for me. I'll call HR and see, only way to know I'm sure.

Looking at citizens advice it only references the unpaid leave, although with it being an op your hr might look at an individual case. Good luck!

Thanks! It would be great if they did.

If you get sick while on maternity leave, you are not entitled to sick pay. You are getting paid for maternity leave, you cannot get a second payment.

Penny, you'd prob get more answers on the Work / Jobs forum if you asked a mod to move the thread for you.
