Nexus 7 (really) stuck in bootloop.

I recently rooted my (2012) Nexus 7 and installed CyanogenMod. All went well until I tried installing G-apps.
The installation process completed and then the tablet got stuck in a bootloop on the spinning CyanogenMod icon.
I can boot into recovery mode but none of the options there have changed anything, the device still only goes as far as the boot screen.

Has anyone got tips how to fix this?

Check a post I made 6 days ago. Basically copy Rom to mini usb stick (or via mini usb converter), and install it from recovery via otg storage. Factory reset it afterwards.

OK< but where/when/how do I install it to the device one i've copied it to a USB stick and have connected the stick via an OTG cable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,345 ✭✭✭T-Bird

Yes mini memory stick or otg cable.

OK, but once I've done that how do I install it?

Sorry, I meant *how* do I install it?

    1. Copy custom from to standard or mini USB Memory stick
    2. Connect to OTG port
    3. Boot Nexus to recovery
    4. Select Install – Select Up a level – scroll down to usb-otg – install rom
    5. Wipe – Factory reset (or what ever custom rom instruction recommends)
    6. Reboot
Correct gapps can be added as well from memory stick. Selection Here

This is from using the Custom recovery the Nexus Root Toolkit added.

It works, I accidently flashed wrong gapps last week and did above to fix.

I don't have an "install" option in recovery mode.
Will take some screenshots and upload them here.

Bricked mine without USB debugging and no recovery (like a challenge, but need to revise for exams now…). Took a while to fix and a lot of methods didn’t work.

Edit: Try nexus 7 toolkit, see if you can use flash stock option (select current status soft bricked/bootloop). It never worked for me but you never know.

Below worked for me. Good luck.

SKIPSOFT ANDROID TOOLKIT - NEXUS 7 from
    http://www.skipsoft.net/?wpdmpro=unified-android-toolkit-v1-3-3
    • Installed it followed instructions entered 05 for nexus 7 original grouper
    • Wait until it loads files
    • Entered 22 for 5.0 (doesn’t matter nothing will happen) does a number of tests
    • Entered 6 to install flash recovery chose CWM
    • Downloaded latest CM11 from here
    http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?type=nightly&device=grouper
    • and Gapps see previous post
    • Copied both to USB and attached to Nexus
    • Rebooted into recovery mode, connected memory stick (CWM automatically mounted it)
    • Selected install zip and navigated to usb stick, installed both
    • (might be good idea to wipe here)
    • Rebooted successfully to CM11

I tried the manual way by fastboot installing but got signature mismatch after I tried to flash the bootloader.
Also tried toolkit from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475 but no good (it works now after I installed custom rom).
It might be worth trying to see if you can install custom recovery from advanced utilities. (Mine never worked, but does now).

Have you considered flashing a custom recovery (i.e TWRP) and once that is installed, using it to flash your custom rom.

Or other option as suggested is to flash stock, then a custom recovery and use that to flash your rom.

The bootloader from the latest 2012 factory images is not valid, if you need a valid bootloader get it from (4.4 KRT16S)

Thanks, I fixed it last night (morning). The above was a stepped sequence on how it got fixed without USB debug and no recovery. Couldn't install recovery etc.

I guessed there was a problem with the bootloader, saw another post on xda with an older on as a solution. Good to know though.

Getting back to this now as I still have been unable to fix this problem in spite of trying all the options.
I think that the main issue is that my device is no longer detected by my PC so I cannot use any of the tools or push a new ROM to the device...

OK, I had forgotten about this thread but as I still haven't been able to fix this problem I'll pick up here again.
Following the above instructions I get as far as booting into recovery (using fastboot).
Following is how I have proceeded from there:
    • booting into recovery puts up the "dead android" screen.
    • Holding down "power" and "volume up" and then releasing "volume up brings up a screen with the following options: "reboot system now", "apply update from adb", "wipe data/factory reset" & "wipe cache partition".
    • "apply update from adb" brings me to the adb screen but as the device isn't being detected I cannot do anything there. The "wipe data" & "wipe cache" options complete but then bring me back in the same screen.

There does not seem to be an option to load a ROM via the OTG cable.

As mentioned you would have needed a custom recovery (i.e TWRP) installed to be able to flash a Rom from OTG!

the toolkit should see it, there are steps to follow if it didn't see the tablet. Most of the problem is Windows drivers and stuff.

Can you boot to fast boot? You can flash a recovery from there.

Lets recap on what you have tried?
    1. Flashing stock either manually or using NRT while your device is in fastboot mode
    2. Flashing a custom recovery again from NRT or manually
    3. Using the other toolkit mentioned here to get a custom recovery onto your device. (never used this myself)

If you tried all the above, and nothing can be flashed then your bootloader may have been corrupted!

If that's the case then you maybe out of options!

Which toolkit are you referring to?

Note: The latest factory images for 2012 now have the correct bootloader files.
