Sadly one person is dead , by a broken Chute !

(This is the BBC Radio 4 this morning, which also stated that they had problems tugging off the vessel, and because the fire was on the car deck they had no place to attached the tug off)

still people on deck, who can't be taken off because of the weather, must be pretty grim by now

It now appears that sadly 5 people have lost their lives. Everyone is now repeorted to be off the ship including the captain who appears to have been one of the last to leave.

Death toll may be higher than previously reported - sounds like a hellish experience, trapped on a burning ferry in high seas...

Maybe a stupid question but why didn't they use the lifeboats to get people off the burning ship?

Depends on the nature of the fire, and the prevailing conditions. It may have been deemed safer to keep them on deck, if the fire was containable, and if seas were rough. As mentioned earlier, modern ships are well designed, with potential catastrophe in mind.
