Recording from Saorview/Freeview?

Can anyone give me pointers on how to record Saorview and Freeview on an enabled TV?

We have Sky in at the minute but they're is rarely anything worth watching and it seems all its being used for is the 3 year old watching kids channels during the day and the girlfriend watching soaps that she has recorded in the evenings, I very rarely watch it myself. It just feels like a colossal waste of money so we are going to switch to the free to air channels.

The sitting room TV and the playroom TV can receive Saorview and Freeview since we are about 3 miles from the border. We have another older TV in our bedroom that will require an external box to get the free channels.

I'm wondering is it possible to record/schedule to record on the 2 enabled TVs or how can you tell if a TV can do this? Both have USB connectivity and I have several high capacity external HDDs that I can use. If recording directly via the TV is not possible, is there an alternative that someone can recommend?

Also, can anyone recommend a box to connect to the older bedroom TV so that we can receive the free channels and also record.

    Thanks in advance.

Don't know anything about recording directly from your TVs. If you could post make and model of the TVs that might help someone else in their reply?

For the older TV, I know my Dad can get both saorview and freeview channels on a Walker saorview box - he lives in the midlands. If its an older TV you might need to connect via a scart cable if there is no HDMI connection. Most of these saorview boxes are PVR ready which means you can connect an external hard drive or USB stick to record. Its really only meant for recording now & again. Walker also have a saorview box with a hard drive built-in which is supposed to handle series links etc but the box has got bad reviews on here.

There are all sorts of other boxes which others would know more about. www.tvtrade.ie have informative videos explaining how the boxes work on their website.

Also some people use a freeview box with a hard disk for recording. (Has pros and cons but should be better at handling series links.) Might want to check on boards which is the better one to get? Humax and Panasonic would be good brands. Might be able to get both freeview and saorview off this box where you are?

We live about ten miles from fermanagh, and we're always able to get the UK channels with an ordinary aerial. But the number available is seriously reduced now. Hac.ve got a satellite dish up now hooked to a Saorview box (Triax HSC114) and can get all the channels I want. There is a hard drive you can plug in, but not got it yet.

The main TV is an LG 42LS345T and the bedroom TV is a Samsung UE22H5000AK. Having a quick read online, I can't seem to find any details regarding them being PVR ready so I can presume they aren't. What are my options regarding recording TV whilst still watching a different channel?

The older TV still has HDMI connectivity but its just really old so an external receiver will need to be bought for it.

I just ran the autotune on the Samsung TV today and it listed 117 free channels where I am so I'm happy enough with that.

Basically, I'm looking for my best bang for buck here. I don't want to have to be spending a few 100 on buying and setting up a load of different boxes in every room if I can avoid it. As I mentioned earlier, the Sky is used by my 3 year old during the day and by my girlfriend watching recorded programmes in the evening and just general channel hopping so the ability to record and series link is essential. We use the sitting room TV most of the time and the bedroom TV early weekend mornings and at night. We have one Sky box in the conservatory which sends its signal to a splitter in the attic and then down to the other rooms with a Magic Eye to each TV.

Is it possible to have something like a combi box/receiver in the attic and send the signal down to all the TVs?

Sorry if my posts sound a bit muddled, I'm having a crash course in terrestrial TV today!
