Hey lads, been way out of the loop on PC stuff (the last 10 years to be honest!) but the time has come for a new build mainly to be used for sitting room gaming

    1. What is your budget? €600 absolute highest we can go for now

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? 1080p couch gaming, hopefully slightly more powerful than the new gen consoles with slight possibility of upgrades down the line - want to play Minecraft with mods, Skyrim with mods, BF4, GTA V, Goat Simulator, 5 nights of Freddy's etc...

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?
Have a 250GB Samsung Evo SSD, wireless keyboard and mouse, 5.1 optical surround sound in sitting room

    5. Do you need a monitor? No, TV with HDMI in sitting room

5a. If yes, what size do you need. see above

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Have wireless mouse and keyboard, Xbox 360 and PS4 controllers

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

    8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer/Paypal

    9. When are you purchasing? Very soon

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? North Dublin, should be alright but might need to post here if I get stuck

That's a great start, thank you very much!

That was the card I was looking at actually... :)

    I'm wondering about the processor?

Would it be enough to oomph a "new gen" console?

Should it really be upped to an I3 or thereabouts?

I would like to keep the build Pentium if possible as I genuinely have no experience with AMD's, but if it was a case to get a bit more power for less I would consider all options.... :)

    Thanks for your input... :)

It might seem like a crazy match but it does actually make a lot of sense, games these days are GPU bottlenecked.

Of course, there'll always be that 10% of games that will show the limiations of the G3258, but clocked to a decent speed (you will want to OC the G3258 though, to be aware), it'll keep up with the GTX970 very well.

Or an i5-4460 + 280X either, if you prefer to be well balanced.

AMD are dead ducks in the CPU market at this stage, Intel is your only man at every price point for gaming.

    Heh, yes.

The PS4's GPU is based off a nerfed AMD HD7870.

A fullsize 7870 gets Passmark of about 4250.
    A GTX970 gets around 8630.

The 'Next Gen' consoles were outdated when they launched.

Ordered this build above as recommended by Mr Tules - just twigged after ordering, do I not need fans? :/

Or are they built into the power supply?

    (Sorry for the n00b question!)

One or two are usually included with the case. That should be good enough to get you started. If temps are a little high could order another one or two if needed down the line. Everything in that build should run nice and cool anyway. Its pretty amazing the performance from a build like this considering the cost and power draw. Probably wouldnt draw much more than a PS4 under load and will outperform it in most games by a mile

Best of luck with it man

R9 290 and i5 not make more sense?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Yeah, as I said an i5 and 280X would be far more balanced. In Battlefield 4 the i5 and 280X would perform a lot better.

Having said that in about 80% of games the G3258 + 970 will be faster. That's dependent on overclocking to about 4.4Ghz+ though...at stock speed the G3258 is still great in most games, but BF4 would run poorly at 3.2Ghz.

Was mentioned earlier in the thread an i5 and a 280x is another good option but i think the OP decided to go with the pentium. Its a m itx case aswell so i think 970/pentium is a decent match imo

Can always drop in an i5 down the line if needed,no need for a new board. And obviously the 970 will be good for a long time.

Im interested to see the improvements that DX12 will bring to a system like this one, thats another pro for the 970 as well. Like Mantle it will shift work that was traditionally cpu to the gpu and reduce the work the cpu has to do. A system like this could see decent gains.

Oh fook.... Having my doubts now

Thought this would run BF4 relatively easily, kinda defeats the purpose of the PC, big console fans of the game looking to switch over a lot of the console third party titles to PC

What would I have to OC "up to" to bring BF4 up to acceptable levels?

    Balls

Any chance of upgrading the processor down the line when more money allows?

Well the good thing is that the G3258 is so cheap it holds its value so well, pay 60, could probably sell it tomorrow for 50 on adverts so no real loss there.

I would say you want to get it to 4.3-4.4Ghz for BF4.

I did some benchmarks here for BF4 on the G3258 at 4.4ghz.

BF4 is one of the exceptions, most other games run perfectly.

    Right,

I can live with that for now I'd say...

I mainly play BF4 on PS4 but I was interested in having a look at the CTE on PC (as I have premium on PS4 version) - I believe console players can play CTE if you have premium so I was gonna have a look and see how it played with K+M... :)

So if I decide I'm not getting enough CPU grunt down the line - it's a case of just popping out the processor and sticking in an i5 or whatever I fancy?

Got delivery of this yesterday and got around to sticking it together earlier on with guidance from a mate, very impressed with the performance so far, thanks a lot lads for the pointers.... :)

I haven't got many PC games to try yet bar L4D2, Fallout New Vegas which seem sweet, interested to see something I have on PS4 compared, might download Metro and have a look....

Once overclocked, in the vast majority of games, the G3258 is an excellent performer.

The only games that throw a spanner into the works are titles like Battlefield 4 64 player and one or two others. 90% of games run on the OC'd G3258 the same way they'd run on the highest end i7.

If you can live with that 10% margin, you're onto a winner.

Obviously, that means nothing if you're a die hard BF4 player....

But overall, it's stellar for the money involved - and worst case scenario, you can sell it for pretty much what you paid for it and go i3/i5. The G3258 matches the i3/i5/i7 in most games when overclocked, but in particularly CPU intensive titles, the lack of hyper threading hurts it bad. So, if you fall into that 10%, even selling it for 50 and upgrading to an i3 for the extra 60-70 would see that bottleneck eliminated for the most part.

That's what I'm thinking, I do love my BF4 but do mainly play on PS4 with friends mainly on PS4 so it's no biggie as I like the couch aspect of the console version, but kinda see the game as my own benchmark (in my head).... :)

I know its very early days but if I was to OC is it a matter of flashing a new BIOS and tinkering around with it there?

Did a few tests earlier via "can I run it" and I can see the bottleneck being the CPU in most titles I threw into it....

Must check out Garry's mod, the wee men want to check that out....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Forget 'Can I run it', it's a very elemental program that operates on a very basic level.

If in doubt, check out my thread on G3258 results- other than BF4, everything else ran like a dream.

Garry's Mod will run like butter.

For Oc'ing, you shouldn't have to flash anything, all you need to do is adjust cpu ratio and if needed, the vcore...

Nice thing about PC is the free games.

Get yourself some DOTA2, Team Fortress 2, Planetside 2, WarThunder, WarFrame, HAWKEN, Mechwarrior and some other things
