I have been using Time Machine to backup to an external HD. I know want to upgrade my iOS from Snow Leopard to Yosemite.

However if I find that I have lost anything can I restore from my Snow Leopard backups to my Yosemite OS easily ?

It won't erase anything during the upgrade, but the answer is yes, you can recover stuff from time machine if you need to.

The installer will ask if you want to recover documents and apps from the Time Machine Backup too. Note that some of your apps may not run under Yosemite. Aperture, FinalCut Pro and a couple of others won't run without updates.

Personally I dislike 'Upgrades" to newer operating systems, always preferable to do a fresh install, apply all OS updates and then reinstall all your programs later. I upgraded from Lion to Mavericks and found that issues I was having with the Ethernet port persisted after the upgrade so last night I installed Yosemite from scratch and the issue is now gone !
