West of Ireland Courses

    Hi guys,

In the midst of planning a west of Ireland trek for July, going from Donegal, down to Mayo, through Galway (stop for a wedding), down to Clare, then down to Valentia Island/Kerry, before heading back to Cork city. Have pencilled in a game in Nairn already, so would like to get another in as its a two week trek.

Obviously I would love to look into Ballybunion, Lahinch etc, but they are way too pricey. Are there any other courses around the 40-50 mark that would be recommended, maybe up to 60? If anything is too pricey, I might treat myself to a round at the second Ballybunion course(its 65e), but would prefer cheaper. Nairn is looking in the region of €40 so would be ideal.

I've looked up the top 100 list there, obviously some nice choices, namely Tralee and Dooks but can in no way afford them. So if there are any recommendations, I will gladly listen and look them up. I could be ambitious looking for courses at those prices though.

Carne, enniscrone, Donegal, strandhill, galwaybay, should all fit your price tag.

I'd be looking for open comps at each course and then planning my trip around those.
Murvagh has an open every Friday and if you are planning on playing more courses in Donegal, let me know and I'll tell you what's days the opens are on.

Galway bay, dingle, skellig bay and castlegregory (9 hole). In budget and good fun to play

Can't recommend ceann sibeal enough , an absolute hidden gem , also known as Dingle golf links . Also Dooks (near valentia) is a good spot. Sounds like a great trip you have ahead of you ðŸ‘

I would play Carne, a great course even though I got it on a bad day last summer.
Main reason I would play it if I was you is because it's so remote, if you've a bit of time then it's a good time to play it. It's a fair bit off the beaten track.

    I'd play Strandhill and Enniscrone.

Or If I had to pick 1 - Enniscrone as it has a bit of all the courses mentioned - (Big Dunes - Small ones - blind holes - flat links)

Ceann Sibeal, Dingle is a great spot - ask Steve or Paul in the clubhouse for a deal and you'll surely get out for 40 or 50 at most. PM me at the time and if I'm around I'll try to get you out at the best rate going.... Enjoy!

Just to give you the head's up of the some of the open days around me:

    Tuesday: Castlebar €20
    Wednesday: Westport €20
Thursday: Claremorris not sure of the price, prob €20.
    Friday: Ballinrobe €20

Of those, I would defo play Ballinrobe, in my opinion, the best parkland around.

Westport is nice, on a wet day it can we quite wet under foot but some excellent holes along the sea front.
Castlebar is ok, i was a member there foe a few years. Excellent greens with some tricky holes.
Claremorris also falls under the ok category; some good holes that stand out.

Overall though, I'd opt for Ballinrobe all day; one of the best back nines around.

Coming en route; Rosses Point, Ballinrobe and then onto Galway Bay probably would be my pick.

Good man, Grip. Glad to see you're an aficionado of the wonderful Ceann Sibeal. I hope to be playing there on Monday, if the weather shapes up as forecast. Pm me next time you're around there for a game.

Lovely hurling, I'll be there Sunday to Thursday so give a shout if weather permits, and we'll hit the links. I should be able to sort you with a good rate anyway!

Cheers for the recommendations folks, will try fit some in along the way although it's a tight enough schedule.

I'd second ballinrobe, quality parkland, total gem with some cracking holes, super greens ..and it's on the road to Galway

A few recommendations which should be reasonably priced(not sure about RP)
Was up at the cups and shields finals in Strandhill this year. Thinks its great value for money if you get the chance.
Rosses point is one of my personal favourites as well. I always love playing it.
I believe Galway Bay is in great shape the last couple of months, great value green fees available. If you can make it Portumna is a lovely track
My past and current clubs are also worth a Visit and very reasonable: Westport and Oughterard.

    Happy golfing
