Steam Trading Cards: What Are They?

I've turned a blind eye to all of the little extra things that Steam has, such as the trading cards. During the summer sales they seemed to push them a lot. What are they actually good for? Or am I just looking too much into something that's only as simple as it's name? - a Trading Card.

They're not really for much, just fun little extra thingies, if you're not interested in them just sell them on the market, you can get a few cents for them

they allow you have more Steam friends, they are more aimed at completionists who liked collecting Pokemon characters and have to have the all.

The amount of money people have dropped on them is crazy

I'll admit I do craft alot of the Steam Game Badges. The advantages of crafting Game Badges (which require steam cards) are:

    - Increased friend slots every 5 Steam levels
    - Every 10 levels you gain a new slot in your Profile to add something to it such as Screenshots, Rarest Achievements, Games you collect etc
    - Every 10 levels increases your chance of randomly gaining a Booster pack by 20% (so at level 50 you have an additional 100% chance of gaining a random booster pack
    - Crafting a Game Badge gives you an Emoticon & Background associated with the game, that can be sold at the market or used on your profiles or steam chat
    - Crafting a game badge will also give you a random coupon to use against a random game.

If none of the above interest you, you can always sell the cards on the market. Average price per card is about 8-12cents but if the game is rarely played, due to lack of supply the cards can go up to nearly 30cents.

Foil cards, which are rarer, can go over a euro per card.

Okay doke. They serve some form of a purpose then. Wouldn't hurt to conform to this I guess.

    Happy Christmas lads!

I see them as pocket money. Managed to sell a booster back for a euro a few days ago.

The amount of money being spent overall on the market place for cards is pretty insane. Each to their own I guess!

I am just trying a program called Steam Idle master which gets all the free cards from games you have without installing them

this is what the dev says about people worrying about getting banned
"The original Idle Master was released almost 6 months ago and to my knowledge nobody has gotten in trouble for using it. I've asked a few of my friends at Valve about it and (unofficially, of course) they don't care and actually think it's pretty cool."
    http://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/2qluhp/new_version_of_steam_idle_master_released/

    I have 2238 drops remaining :D

Been using idle master the past while, its essentially mining cards while not gaming. The drop rate is around 1 card every 15mins, so 4 hours nets about 1.44 EUR( depends on game library of course etc. )

    Great util.

Ignoring idiots who comment "far right" because they don't even know what it means

That's amazing, I actually went ahead and installed a bunch of games to get drops last steam sale, would have saved myself a bunch of hassle if I knew this existed.

You don't need to have the games installed
