Buying in the UK

I'm looking at getting a car in the new year to drive in the UK. Just looking for some general pointers (I understand if people don't know the specifics of the UK market).

    Budget: £5k-£7k (€6k-€8.5k)
    Age: 2007+
    Engine: 1.8L-3L Petrol

I've mostly been looking at 3 series BMW coupés, C series saloon Mercedes or maybe at a stretch a CLK (but I'm doubtful a great one could be got for under £7k).
IS Lexus' are nice as well but a bit too boring looking. Petrol Audis seem relatively hard to find (TTs aside) but they're another option.
    I currently have a 2003 C180 Mercedes so I don't want to downgrade.

My concern is with reliability and possibly insurance.

Will I be likely to be forking out thousands every year for expensive replacements or can I be fairly confident in the car?
I'm ok with tyres, servicing and all that but less so for the fiddly things like sensors or serious surgery on the engine. I know stuff like that can get pricey.

My more middle of the road and sensible options would be something like a Mazda 6 or a Honda Accord.

Also, does anyone know what the market for Insurance is like in the UK in comparison to Ireland? Is it roughly the same sort of price? I presume there's no problem with transferring over my no-claims?
