I want to buy a new drumkit but I don't know which one to buy. The set up I want will be 8, 10 and 12 inch rack toms, 14 and 16 floor toms (or hanging) and a 22 inch kick. I'm keeping my current snare and I have hard ware but am considering getting a rack so a shell pack would be fine. I have 3 possibilities in mind, 1. Gretsch Catalina Maple, 2. PDP Concept Maple series or 3. The new Pearl Export (poplar/mahogany composite). The Gretsch and the PDP are similar in price but a shell pack of Export is about half the price. I have played PDP kits and like the tone from the toms. I've heard the Gretsch can be horrible to tune as the toms have only 5 lugs but I haven't played one so I don't know how true that is. I have always been loyal to pearl but it seems like on their cheaper kits the toms can be very ringy or clangy. I am open to suggestions about any kit not just the 3 mentioned above but I should state I am on a budget so need to keep it similar to the prices of these kits. Any help on the matter would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance everyone.

How about a Yamaha stage custom? You would have to buy a 5 piece config and then add an 8" and a 16" but it's worth it. Excellent drums for the price, imo the best of the lot in that price range. I've owned the Gretschs, PDP's and a few exports in my time (albeit the older exports), but everything about the yamaha beats them all. Try one if you can.

On the PDPs, these are good kits, they would be my next in line. I play DW's as my main gigging kit and the PDPs are a decent alternative. But in sheer build quality, the yamaha's are better all round.

Do they only come in birch? I can only see birch. I'm searching Thomann.de and Musicstore.de if any one knows any other good places to search for kits let me know. Thanks

Yeah, all Stage Customs are birch I believe.

Check some of the UK sites too like GAK and Andertons.

I bought a Yamaha kit from the Drum Centre in Naas during one of their recent one day sales. I got it for a lot less than I would have on the likes of Thomann so it's worth keeping on eye on their website.

I know the Sound Shop in Drogheda match internet prices and they are a dealer of Yamaha and Pearl so worth checking them out too. They should be able to order in kits in a few days if they don't have them in stock.
