Just giving the car a quick clean and had a quick look over the engine, when I removed the oil cap I saw this yellowish substance. I can't recall seeing this stuff before. I'm clueless about engines but it doesn't look good.. Can anyone here advise me on what it is and what I should do?

    Car is a BMW 320 petrol (e46)

Either condensation or the heat gasket is fried, had a similar issue recently, and it was condensation

It looks like a mayonnaise type colour, I'd also be thinking that the head gasket is failing.

Get a garage to do a pressure test on the cooling system.

+1 for the pressure test, that should answer it is the car overheating or taking more coolant than usual OP???

No, not overheating at all, coolant level normal.

I'd go for a drive (proper warm up) and have another look before worrying about it.

From my last 6 cylinder 728i. Condensation from short journeys. If your coolant level is fine, auxiliary fan and water pump fan are fine and coolant levels are fine, I wouldn't be worried.

That's good to hear. I haven't been driving it much recently, when I do the journeys are usually very short (5-10 miles).

Same as myself, I've only done 90 miles since mid October, hence the lack of use is behind it

I occaisionally get this on my 325ci, check your levels and if all's good then happy days. A blast down the motorway will sort it out fairly sharpish.

You'd know you've been a BMW owner for more than a little while so!
