do you know what type the box is 727 / 904 etc.? There are re-build kits on ebay for both types from what I saw.

    I think it's a 727 . I bought a kit offor eBay for it , should be here on the 7/8 of Jan .

    It's the Torqueflite A-727.
It was fitted on this side of the Atlantic to the early 3-speed Range Rover, which may be an avenue worth exploring for anyone looking for parts in the future.

    Here's a Mopar service manual:

Let us know how you get on. Have nightmares about doing any sort of work to the transmission but it's a job that'll be required some day and no doubt just when I need the machine.

Make sure you get a new filter for it too; many rebuild kits don't include one.

There is a brass one in this kit , the old one was in **** and it is easily replaced , just take off the bottom of the sump and 3 screws hold it in place

Not a good one Im afraid , we put the new kit into it and fitted the gearbox back in but no drive or even oil pressure in it so out again incase anything was wrong . Couldn't see anything out of place and put it in again to find we had reverse and a forward gear but no power once the drive is connected .
Looks like the pump isn't working it but the father is adamant that the pump was sound so we took it out again and sent it away to be reconditioned . Its about £250 to get it done plus courier but hopefully this will sort it .

If it was driving in First and Reverse, it sound more like a front brakeband issue than the pump.
No harm getting the pump looked at, but make sure the front brake is correctly assembled and adjusted when you're putting it back together again.

It seemed to be top gear and reverse that were turning . We put new bands in but maybe we have something assembled wrong even though everything looks correct from the manual , YouTube and the pictures I took when we were stripping .
What adjustment is on the front brake (band ) ?

Having only First and Drive (third gear) and nothing else has me stumped!

Setting the backlash/slack on the brake bands is vital for the transmission to engage and disengage gears properly. Or even to select them at all!

Along with the workshop manual posted earlier in this thread (http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/Torqueflite_A-727_A-904_Service_Manual.pdf), I found this book to be very useful too when I was rebuilding mine:
