Here Drive or Maps apps won't open - Lumia 635

The wife has a Lumia 635 but only occasionally uses it for navigation as she has a Garmin sat nav in the car.

Went to use Here Drive yesterday and the app opened once but then when she went to use it again it wouldn't open at all, just got thrown back to the start screen after a short pause.

Tried Here Maps instead and the same thing happened.

Rebooting the phone a couple of times had no effect, still can't open either app.

Not impressed with being let down with no mapping whilst on a trip away without her normal sat nav.

Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix?

    Phone is still under warranty.

I have a 625 and a 635 here, just opened the Here Maps and the Here Drive+ apps on both with no issues.

Have you tried uninstalling both apps, then reinstalling? Are you using your Microsoft account or have you registered with Here apps or are you logging in with Facebook?

There could be a couple of different reasons for the apps to close, but there's nothing obvious based on the model of the phone itself.

Thanks for the quick reply, I don't think she has a Here account just the Microsoft account, I'll check later when she is back (assuming she can find the way!:pac:).

Will uninstalling and re-installing the apps have any effect on Maps she has saved to the phone for offline use?

I don't think so, as they're stored on the memory card (or the internal hard drive in the phone if you don't have a memory card), but give me a minute and I'll uninstall the apps, then reinstall and see what happens. It shouldn't take too long anyway to download the maps again if they're deleted.

EDIT: Just uninstalled there and reinstalled, it kept all my maps and even the login details (as in I didn't have to log in again, just agreed to the t&c), so there won't be a problem with your downloaded maps.

The missus just got home and without doing anything more both apps are working perfectly!

Don't know what to make of it, I really hate intermittent problems like this you never know where you stand or if it's going to work or let you down the next time....

In any case I got her an 830 on a Cyber Monday deal as a Christmas present as the camera on the 635 has been a real let down.

Intending to pass on the 635 to our daughter she will hardly need Here Drive+ when she is walking to school!

Yep, I had a similar experience with Cortana going a bit weird, and then for some unknown reason before I went to do anything, it started working again properly!

One of the things I find useful about family members having Windows Phones is the Family Room which allows you to have things like shared calendars, notes, etc.

Also had problems with here drive yesterday. In the middle of two separate journeys yesterday, the app just closed itself.

Last week I tried to open it and it wouldn't open until I 'signed up' by creating an account with them.

The here apps are staying with Nokia? Aren't they?

I'd guess so as Here maps are now also free for Android although still only beta they work well for navigation on my Moto G.

I believe that the Here Maps and Drive apps on Lumia devices have been handed over to Microsoft for future development. But the apps will use the same backend data provided by Here (and thus the reason for the Here account signup).

The company is focusing development on their iOS and Android apps going forward. Here Maps (beta) on Android is already getting good reviews, particularly due to their offline maps. Not sure how they can offer it for free, and if it will remain free after beta, but good all the same!
