Hoping to get the new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movie for Christmas, in the meantime, browsing over the old movies, how do these new movies compare to the old ?

    1. Planet of the Apes: well, what can you say that hasn't already been said before. The ultimate apocalypse movie with perhaps the most devastating ending of any movie.

    2. Beneath the Planet of the Apes: basically a re-run of the first movie with new astronauts. The ending of that movie was basically off the wall, but of its Cold War time.

    3. Escape from the Planet of the Apes: probably the best of the Apes sequels, which cleverly reverses the 'fish out of water', where this time the apes are subjected to the interrogation. Following the lighter start, it gets very dark when the humans learn of their ultimate fate and try to prevent it by murdering the apes.

    4. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes: a good storyline executed on a diminishing budget. However, it has it's moments.

    5. Battle for the Planet of the Apes: the one with John Huston as 'the Lawgiver' otherwise forgettable.

    6. Planet of the Apes (remake): a jokey and ultimately poor effort, only notable for the Charlton Heston cameo.

    7. Rise of the Planet of the Apes: things get back on track again with this re-boot with photo realistic CGI apes. A clever reworking and updating of the human caused apocalypse that brings about the rise of the apes.

    8. Dawn of the planet of the Apes: what's left of Humanity on the brink of going back to the stone age, while the Apes bide their time in the forests. More a study of how the Apes are struggling with their new found supremacy and debating their future relationship with the humans.

All in all, I think these new movies belong on the same shelf as the 1968 original, hopefully they'll keep the standard up for the next one.

Apes rule the cinema once more !!!

If you're a fan of the films you moght want to look up a fanedit called Saga Of The Apes that combines the first four films. Interesting stuff, to say the least.
