Connecting satellite feed through HDMI

We got a new TV as a present:-) Very nice, 42 inch LG. But it doesn't have a connection for the satellite cable at the back although the spec from pixmania says it should. http://www.pixmania.ie/led-tv/lg-42lb6200-led-3d-television/22177770-a.html

Also, when I go to tune in, it offers the option of tuning in the satellite signal, even though the socket for the cable is not there...

Anyway, is it possible to to connect the cable through a HDMI converter, or is there a better way to do it?

Many thanks in advance for your help:-)

In a word, no. You cannot connect to a dish using hdmi.

Did pixmania send you the wrong model? What is the exact model number printed on the TV? Perhaps part a photo of the rear connectors.

Thanks for your reply. Pixmania sent me the model ordered, but I think their online description might be wrong. It says LG 42LB6200 - LED 3D television
    HD TV 1080p, 42 inch (107 cm) 16/9, 100Hz, Freeview (DVB-T), Cable (DVB-C), Satellite (DVB-S), 3D Ready, HDMI x2, USB 2.0, but there's no satellite connection.

I was wrong in my first statement - there's an option to tune in the aerial, and the CABLE, not the satellite. When the TV was ordered, I was hoping it would have a 7 day epg for satellite. (At the moment, my set top box EPG just gives me current and next programme for satellite channels.) Is it possible to set up my satellite signal as a cable signal for this tv, through some sort of a set top box?

Yeah, as you've found out that model doesn't have a satellite tuner. Most, if not all, their current Smart TV range has a satellite tuner, but that one isn't a "Smart TV"

Unfortunately, you can't use a settopbox to convert DVB-S to DVB-C. You may just buy yourself a decent Freesat HD box, by the likes of Humax. Manhattan do a good value Freesat HD box too.

LG has two kind of tv's
    1 is 42LB6200 only analogue/digital tuner
second is 42LB6200L (I might be wrong with the letter) and this has sat tuner.
All there is is just one little letter after the model nr.

    Thanks for the replies.

So, if their description says Satellite (DVB-S), this means its their mistake?

False selling demand your money back or a replacement.... exactly the reason I'd never ever buy a tv online....better to buy locally from a small independent store and can return easily if there is a problem.

The Pixmania description clearly mentions satellite, so you certainly have grounds for appeal.

Just be aware that while some LG TVs do have built-in satellite tuners, none of them have a 7 day EPG. Only Freesat branded TVs can do 7 day EPGs for satellite channels. Usually these are Panasonic or Samsung branded TVs

Thanks for the advice. Can I get a freesat box that accepts the aerial as well as the satellite cable?
I don't think the Humax models do...

I have walker WP95SAT-HD box for sat and it has been great. Has 7day EPG and record not a problem. Drawbacks are: Only record 1 thing at the time. It won't let you watch something that's recorded earlier either. Using the telly for local channels.

Also own walker combi box with digital and sat tuner. In theory it's good but I got bit fed up with it. When using firmware with 7 day EPG recordings failed quite often and box froze a lot.

Walker boxes should be widely available. I think it was about 70 quid with the HDMI in the box when I got it.

Thanks. That sounds reasonable, but it would be great to have aerial and sat channels on the same remote. Maybe I'm looking for too much!

Currently, the only semi-official way of getting both Freesat and Saorview channels on one remote with full EPG for both is with a Freesat branded TV. Even then, you have to switch between Freesat and Saorview guides.

    See here for pics:

The alternative to this is to use a Linux-based combo receiver, which is able to pull down the EPG data for Freesat and merge it with the Saorview EPG. These boxes require a bit of tinkering to setup and range in price from about €150 (Amiko Alien Triple Tuner) to €300/€400 (Gigablue Quad, Vu+). I use both the Amiko Alien and Vu+ Duo. The former is cheap but a bit rough around the edges, while the latter is considerably more expensive, but is more robust in my opinion (screenshot below):

Are you using vix? If yes what skin is that?

Yes, Vix/Openvix. That's a screenshot of an older version of the Vix firmware. It's currently setup with Vix-night-HD which is pretty much the same.
