I have a canon 600d and a while back I bought a Yonungo YN565EX. I have not used it that much - partly because i dont understand how it all works. Usually I can get it working after some fiddeling but last night I tried everything, was driving me mad but I could not get it to work!

Putting the camera in the hot shoes does not automatically work. Fiddling around I can get the 580 (Edit: 565EX) to fire when the popup flash goes - I did it before but I cant seem to get it to work again. I also have a wireless receiver which is tricky.

I need to start at the beginning again and learn the basics, can anyone please point me to a link or tutorial for learning the basics of flash?
    Thanks

Download the manual of the gear that you have. You might be missing something obvious.

Have a browse of this relating to YN622C:
    https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B77OmmGIg0gMVFpqNkpBYXBHajA/edit?pli=1

Which may or may not be your trigger, still good info though.

No. 1 recommendation, for a less technical information relating to your flash but second to none in terms of how to use portable lighting, check out www.strobist.com
You can download lighting 101 as a pdf and read through it. I have that done, but have got very little practice in yet.

Once finished with the above, i have found www.strobox.com worth a look for seeing a range of set-ups

Do you have a yongnuo flash and a canon 580 or is that just the one 565 or 568 it's just you mention a 580, if somebody were to say to me that their flash will only fire when another flash fires the most obvious thing would be that it's stuck in slave mode, if it's the 568 then you may have to hold the mode button for a few seconds to set it to the on camera menu that might be catching you.

Sorry for my typos. I have a Yongnuo 565EX, no canon flash.

The 600d is supposed to be able to sent a wireless trigger, but i have not been able to get it to work without the popup acting as a trigger. Then I cant get the 565 to act as a slave without a lot of fiddeling.

I just got my flash trigger to work - it's a basic one from amazon but it works anyway. I just find a lot of shots can eb way dark or bright, so I need to figure out how to manually override etc

The pop up flash IS the trigger, You must have the pop up on to trigger external flash, but you can adjust the power of the pop up so as it will still trigger ext. flash without adding light to your shot from the pop up.
