Hi Guys hoping someone can lend advice ,I am getting a puppy soon (Staffy), I still live at home but will be moving out soon (bringing dog with me) I work 9-5 (will arrange doggie day care when I move out) but my mother will be at home with the dog minding it as a puppy, obviously they are very hard work she will be out some times during the day etc, would anyone recommend those training pens for when you cant supervise them? the dog will generally have free roam out the back garden, and mainly in the house etc but if she was to go out for an hour or 2, would those pens be a good solution?

Get a crate and crate train the dog,it will be easier for house training and for when you move out.

Watch some crate training videos on youtube.

Though you can't leave them in the crate for long when they are pups its usually and +1hour for every month of age.

but they can sleep through the night in it no problem so they don't run free around and wreck the house.

    Great dogs staffys

Thanks , exactly what I was going to do was start Crate training, especially for sleeping, however Although its going to be minded by the mother during my working hours, I don't ideally want her constantly cleaning up/ Chasing after the dog, as it wont be fair on her, The back garden is good for an hour or 2 to get out for a play, but when indoors id ideally like the dog within a fenced area so it doesn't get up to mischief while im not there..alot of people come and go, id also be worried about it getting out the front door lol

You need to make sure that your mother is on the same page as you when it comes to training, if she does something differently then it can confuse the dog. You need to make sure that the crate is never used as punishment or to "put the dog away for a while" when s/he is wide awake for example.

Puppy pens are great and all, but it can slow down the potty training process a bit if you are not watching them. Ideally you don't want the puppy to do its business in the house, full stop. Mistakes will be made, but you have to do your best to prevent them from happening.

I was minding two 12 week old puppies there last week and both myself and my boyfriend were wrecked tired from them because we were keeping on top of their potty training (we made heaps of mistakes with our two adult dogs), the moment they appeared to be sniffing and circling we brought them out straight away. We had 3 alarms set during the night to get up and let them out, 2am/5am/8am, they were progressing brilliantly, at one point one of the puppy's even asked to go outside all by herself, at only 12 weeks old!

When you get a puppy and you are potty training it you are going to have to chase them around for the next few weeks whether you like it or not really! And not only that you're going to have to do lots of socialising when they are at that critical early puppy stage!
