should you rise the front wheels off the ground with the bucket when working the back actor or is there advantage?

You don't have to fully rise them but it helps stable the digger and takes the bounce out of it when your operating.

Yeah makes it easier, leave the flat part of the bucket down then push it down until the wheel rise. Same with the rear rears use them to lift wheels but also to keep digger level.

    Yes.
Not only for stability but also to stop the front wheels and more importantly the front wheel bearings from wearing.

There are lots of digger classes available in most areas through FAS/Solas.
I would highly recommend that you do one of these courses. You will receive a "licence" to operate the digger which will cover you during a QA or Health and Safety inspection.

another question.- this fellow has the back actor in the middle. would it be dangerous if the back actor was over at the side near the trailer as all the weight would be at one side?

Would always work it on one side or the other here, biggest thing is try not to swing the arm out to the side it's mounted on with a full bucket, always load across the machine if you get me, quickest way you'll put it over is swinging it out to the side it's mounted on.

It's an awful lot easier to see what your doing when it's off to one side

That squeaking would have me demented!! GREASE IT!!

And no there is nothing wrong with working the back actor to the left or right. It will change the centre of gravity of the digger obviously but it is designed to work there.

It gives you better anchorage. when you are at heavy digging and pushing the bucket into the ground it lifts the back of the machine off the ground , As a result the machine is constantly moving about. Bucket on the ground anchors it a lot better and stops this.
