The used space on the hard drive does not add up to the total of the files recorded.
    Any idea why?
I don't use it for photos or music either

When you originally set it up did you reduce the default percentage for music, think it defaults to 20% unless you change it.

    Another Opera user ;)

The custom firmware free space figure is always less than the box itself reports. Not a problem so long as the box itself doesn't run out of free space.

If you're really curious you could telnet or SSH onto the box and issue the command
    df -h

to see used and free space and how the partitions are laid out

The only way to reduce the music / photo partitions is to reformat the HDD.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, you have a 500GB hard disk and only 40% used, ours is 320GB and rarely below 80%, you can archive stuff off to an external hard disk over USB or through ethernet to your PC.

Obsolete as smartphones have killed off the platforms it ran on.
But Opera Mini is available for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone
Works very well IME, on an Android tablet, anyway.

I set a filepath on laptop to humax.
When I open up the harddrive there is a backup folder with lots of tv files in it.

    Can anyone explain?

You didn't post what's in the .BACKUP folder.

There's no such folder on mine.

The folders with a dot followed by the recording's name (the name beginning with a dot makes it a hidden folder in Linux) are used for chapter marks and preview images, they don't usually take up very much room. If you want to you can delete them without affecting the recording itself at all.

    ...

Aha. Found out what the .BACKUP folder is:

    http://hummy.tv/forum/threads/all-available-drive-space-being-used-up-since-custom-firmware-upgrade.4917/

It's to do with the Convert Files utility, which I've never used, this makes copies of recordings in a format which is supposed to be more compatible with streaming to various devices. By default backup copies of the unaltered recordings are kept, so this will eat up space fairly rapidly.
