Replacement Laptop/Tablet

Hi, my current laptop (HP Pavilion G6, A10 Quadcore with Radeon HD7660G) is dying and I need a quick replacement.
I mainly use it for college work, chrome excel & word mainly, some CAD and Gaming but these are not necessary for replacement laptop.
I was wondering is a Chromebook a good replacement that will tie me over for a few months? Or if not, could someone recommend a okayish laptop? Around 200-300 would be ideal.
I would consider a tablet either, just dont know which one too pick though!

    Thanks
    Iainkw4x.

What's wrong with your current laptop?

200-300 is a very small budget, Dell have an Inspiron 15 with 4th gen i3, 4GB Ram for €329 including delivery I would stretch to.

You can get cheaper than that - there are a few deals around at approx. €250, but with bottom of the barrell Celeron processors with hugely reduced performance. Fine for web browsing, having said that, but if you plan running Autocad the i3 is well worth the extra money.

Chromebook is grand if you literally are content with just web, docs and video. Can be gotten very reasonably as well, around €200.

The hinge and LCD frame broke, which are not covered under the warranty, this happened about 6 months ago and now the wear from the screen hanging off one hinge has started to mess with the display, and when I went about getting it repaired, the guy I usually go to said i was better of buying a new one.

I just need a something to tie me over until I finish college in may, hence the small budget.

HP stream 11 or Asus x205. both 11 inch screens. I think both come with Microsoft office 365 1 year thrown in. 210-240 euro.

Unless you only work with less complex 2d drawings you will struggle to run CAD on something <€300. If you can do without CAD at home (using computer labs or whatever for CAD) then you should be alright. If the display is ok when held in position you could try securing it to the original hinges using epoxy resin or something. Depends where the break is etc. as to whether this is a goer or not, but if it isnt any use as it is then you have nothing to lose.
