They run a 24hr service, so I suppose the answer very much depends on the reason for the call, but I can't imagine how it wouldn't be legal.

As far as I know the Guards arrive at peoples houses at early, or late, times as there is a greater chance that someones at home. There is no point coming during the day as most people are at work.

No, it's not illegal to knock on someone's door at 10pm, or 11pm, or 3am, or any other time.

Im guessing the guard dealing with it is on nights. I had a local guard call late one night too unexpected for a witness statement, never thought anything of it

It is perfectly legal. Congrats on doing your civic duty.

I agree 10pm is not an ideal time. But gardi work 24/7. It's quite possible he is working a night shift for the next while. How you be happier if he calls around in a month at 6 pm? When it's better for you?

Since you started this thread at twenty-to-one in the morning, I'm guessing you're not typically under the bedclothes at 10pm.

And even if you are, you're unlike the vast majority of the adult population.

The things people will complain about are unreal.

Yes perhaps the Gardai should be made ring in advance before calling upon suspected offenders.

    Give them a head start:rolleyes:

Sounds to me like this lad was just killing time, definitely wouldn't call it work anyways.

The OP should should get some legal advice on this, I reckon.

Is it legal? What does that mean? Do you mean that you felt it was a bit late for the guard to call and you were inconvienced? The Gardai are too busy to make appointments for when they call to people. Quite likely he was calling as he needed to speak with you? And maybe he did not have your phone number? Maybe he needed to give you a message that was time urgent? But if it was LEGAL to call - by asking if it was legal you are also asking if it was illegal. Never heard it being illegal for a Garda to call to someones house. I've had them at my door at 3am once - mistaken report made that there was someone breaking into my house. They had been given the wrong house number by the person making the report [an honest mistake as they were actually looking for next door]. I had no problem with them calling as if the call had been meant for my house i was glad that they came and so fast!! And 10pm for most people is just after the 9 o clock news. Not late at all.
