I have an iMac with Yosemite.
I used to have an iPhone and used iMessage regularly.
    Now I don't have the iPhone ...

Should I be able to use iMessage through the "Messages" app with iPhone users ?

My son has my old iPhone 5 and says iMessage eventually activated this week, after three weeks or so waiting ... but his phone number still shows as red in my Messages and messages I try to send are marked as exclamation and not sent.

You should be able to, I think, but coming from your email address.

Get your son to send you an iMessage to your registered email address.

Ok thanks. That's not much use then. Better to email him and vice versa.
