Purchased a 06 yarns today and was travelling home on long journey at about 55 mph when the bonnet blew up, managed to keep calm and could see under bonnet to get it pulled in.
Seems the bonnet catch is faulty and its closes but doesn't stay closed.
    I was not told this.
Could have been a real disaster and got off lucky

Good to hear you live to tell the tale and there was no actual accident as a result, could have being a lot worse.

Was there any damage done to the bonnet, hinges etc. as a result. Was the car bought of a dealer or private sale?

was it a private or dealer sale ??!! u where lucky OP , i personally woudnt leave a vehicle go if it was in that position ! happened me before on an old starlet ( but was my own fault not closing it down fully) scary stuff alright

If the seller knew that issue was present, it was a very ****ty thing to do.

Bonnet is damaged, windscreen and hinges and mouldings, also notice a dent in the roof above the windscreen as well.
I know I was so lucky as bonnet flew up at fair speed and quite a thud too, luckily i could manage to see some from beneath bonnet to steer it of road.

To be fair, if it was a recurring problem it would have flown up before and broken the windscreen etc before.

There's a good chance the bonnet just wasn't closed properly.

Awful thing to happen though. I know someone that had it happen, roof damage was the most expensive bit.

I didn't even think this was possible. Isn't there a lock and a secondary catch mechanism?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yep. But its quite possible for the bonnet to open despite the secondary catch.

I know a guy it happened to and he wasn't quite as lucky. Bonnet flying up resulted in him crashing into a ditch and he wrote of his Caddy van. His own fault entirely as he never closed bonnet properly after topping up the oil. He took it on the chin...

Glad you got away without any serious personal injuries. My bonnet opens forwards and I like it that way!
