Waiting for the sales, is it worth it?

I'm making the jump to a DSLR and wonder is there much of a saving to be had each year by waiting for the sales? I see Canon have the cashback offer till January 20th but do stores also give much of a discount do you think?
Looking at maybe Canon 1200 plus extra lens or Canon 100d or Canon 700d. But very open minded right now as I don't know much about cameras tbh.
Been looking at adverts too. Maybe there is an annual flood of second-hand cameras after santa delivers new models??
    Cheers

Well myself and my girlfriend have the Canon 100d and the Canon 700d. There's very little difference in terms of pixels etc etc, but they are completely different fits. The 100d is super light, but the 700d has a fold out screen, great for movies. Both are excellent cameras.

Best of luck with the purchase.

Thanks very much!! That's good to know.
I'm beginning to realise reading posts that the body is a relatively unimportant in non-pro cameras and that the lense is key to a great photo. So maybe the 1200 and use the savings plus some more cash on a good lens might be a good way to go. Any opinions on that or suggestions on a lens?

The 50mm 1.8 is usually recommended as one of the first lenses you should pick up, not an expensive lens but a great piece of kit.

Then it all depends on what you want to shoot - if you want to play with long exposures, night shots etc. I'd get a decent tripod too!

Thanks folks for all the advice. Thinking now a good secondhand 600 or 650d with 50mm 1.8 to start. Then add good lenses in time if I develop a genuine interest.

I was considering the Canon 1200d at one stage but went for something else. I see Harvey Normans have a big reduction plus cash back from tomorrow, 130 cheaper. Might tempt someone ...

Got a 1200d few days ago with 18-55mm kit lens in Curry's for 300 (excl. 25 quid cashback). Class camera definitely good enough for a first time camera. Although lens (as expected) is lacking
