Just wondering if your insurance is up for renewal and your NCT is out will they still insure you?

It's when you change car that they sometimes ask for an NCT cert but on a renewal they normally don't ask for it. You are required under the terms of most policies to maintain the car properly but that doesn't mean that if the NCT expires that it invalidates your insurance.

Third party cover will continue with no NCT, but other cover may well be void.

My brothers car was stolen last year at 10pm and his NCT expired at midnight on the night it was taken. The insurance rep couldn't explain how lucky he was. They wouldn't have covered him if it was taken after 12

Exactly. As always read the T&Cs of the policy. You may not be covered for fire & theft or own damage.

I think you are better off insuring a car later in the year as insurance company do risk assessment at the start of the year so polices will be higher in January than June.

My renewal is in April, are you saying I should let my policy lapse, put the car up on blocks and take the bus from next April to the end of 2015 in order to get a reduced renewal in December?

    Ridiculous post.

I'm sure that could be the case but who would do that?

On a related note, motor insurers are now forcing repair garages/outlets doing work on their behalf, to check if there is a valid NCT disc on your car. Not having a valid NCT is increasingly being used as an excuse by the insurer to not pay the garage for the claim.
