Holiday in a few days, 450D is dead, charger is lost. What are my options?

I have a Canon 450d I got a few years back, but hardly ever use. It's currently dead, I appear to have lost the charger and I'm away on a trip to Thailand for 2 weeks on Sunday.

Firstly, lets acknowledge the fact that I'm an idiot for letting it come to this. :o

What are my options for getting a new battery or charger on such short notice?

Are there any shops I could try? (Since I've missed the boat for any online stores)

Is it something I could get in airport shops or duty free?

Is it something I could get in Phuket when I arrive?

    Thanks in advance :)

A quick google has told me that you are looking for a LC-E5 charger and LP-E5 battery (not liable if this is incorrect, confirm it out yourself). They don't appear to have been used since the 500d, which is about 4 models back, replaced by the 550d in january 2010. Consequently, even though it was a popular camera, i think it is unlikely that a regular airport outlet or most shops would have those in stock for you. I'm sure they'd be able to order it in, but you are stuck for time.

Unless you know someone with the same camera, i think you are fecked.

My advice is, if it comes down to it, and you can't get a charger. See what used entry level cameras are selling for on adverts. Either buy 2nd hand there if you have time or buy a new body in the airport. Sell it on adverts when you get home. Sure it will cost you a bit but you'll have images to last you a lifetime.

My father-in-law recently forgot his dslr on a trip to turkey. It was quite frustrating to see the iphone pics that he did get as i knew the opportunities he missed to get high quality images.

Theres a dixons in the airport. Ring them and ask them do they have a suitable charger in stock. If they do, reserve it. If they don't ask can they get one sent from another store.

I'd be highly surprised if you cant get a charger in the airport. Airports usually have all kinds of chargers because its what people always want to buy in airports.

I'd also be very surprised if you can't get one in phuket.

Now there's sensible advice, ring dixons.

If that doesn't work i wouldn't wait til you get to phuket though, you don't want it eating into you holiday.

I've got one from Whelan Cameras which I'm told will be with me tomorrow evening, so fingers crossed.

I've had a look at what's in Phuket too and there appears to be any amount of electronics shops, so that'll be plan B.

    Thanks for the help. :)

@syklops: why the fcuk didn't I think of that! :pac:

    If you don't get sorted,
let me know and you can have mine for your holidays

I live in Dublin, and could meet you before you fly off.

In Bangkok go to Pantip Plaza. You will be able to buy a charger and new battery there. You will have to haggle a bit so know the price at home.

*edited to add - Pantip Plaza is five floors of shops and stalls with all sorts of technology available. There is genuine & copy items. It can be a bit confusing but you will find that there is a sort of logic to the place and most of the Photography Shops will be close together. It's not as good as Hong Kong or Singapore, but still not bad. Found a few bargains there on my last visit.

Cheers, that's exceptionally sound of you to offer! I'd feel like a right scab :pac:

@CabanSail: I'll only be in BK airport on the way, I'll be spending a couple of days there but it will be the last leg of the trip unfortunately.

Fingers crossed the courier gets here on time.
