There are better places to ask, but I don't know where they are. I do know someone who writes application notes on CAN Bus Chips, but that's no use.

Perhaps your battery is poor or you don't drive the car often? Rear Screen Heater and Headlamps will run a poor battery flat in minutes if the Engine isn't running.

Sounds perfectly normal. Even modern central locking will flatten a battery after a while

Ye i understand that all those things can drain it , but every morning it was dead and even if it was started and stopped for a small time it would be dead again , i replaced it with the old radio and alls fine but id love to find a fix because the units great other than the drain issues

Right its your radio that's doing it. The web is full of stuff about this problem but you are better off asking on a vw motoring forum to get a better response. If its a Chinese unit then you have a problem

    Test the battery!
Make sure the radio is wired correctly (one wire is likely for lighting circuit). If the battery is sub par slightly and lighting feed wire is incorrectly to permanent power, it will flatten battery. It should not take any current with keys out and lights off. If it is illuminated fully with lights off OR can turn on with out keys in 1st position, then it's wired wrong!

The CAN bus will tell you nothing about this.

A friend of mine got one of these units for a caddy van. The ignition sense does not work and was killing the battery.  The last time I saw the van there was a hole where the radio should be so he hadn't got it working. His was a Chinese unit

Moved from Hobby Radio, should get an answer here.

Around 07 there was a change to the canbus. To stop the power drain from the headunit George Dalton should be able to point you in the right direction. It's a common problem with the RCD/RNS-510.

Even if you did a search on Google there's a lot of good info.

You just need an updated can bus gateway from a car that came with a higher spec form the factory, you can buy them on ebay.de handily enough.

It's located under the steering wheel up from the clutch pedal and over towards the centre console slightly. You will need to code the new can bus gateway to your car with VCDS, for this reason it doesn't matter what country you buy the gateway in as you can just change the coding with VCDS.

I'm not sure what part number gateway you need but you will find the info on a MK specific forum, google is your friend.

As above, if you take down the cover above the pedals in the drivers footwell and look up near the clutch pedal you will see it.

Not a clue what this thread is about! Are you all smoking something?

If you do go ahead and get one be sure to read the coding from your existing gateway before removing it.

I believe OP is worried his radio unit is draining the battery?

Since OP already have found car radio forum here I'll close this thread.
