    Hi,

I'm looking for a 10lb organic salmon. It doesn't have to be wild but it does have to be organic. Strict orders from the boss!

    Anybody know the going rate?

Don't want to make this a Dublin only issue but that's where I am for now.

    Thanks in advance

What makes a farmed salmon 'organic'?

I suspect the food the fish is fed?

As said, the food. Also the stocking density.

Do you know whether they get antibiotics or dyes?

    Not Normally.
    Price is around €8/kg
    Roughly €32 for a 10lb fish.

That sounds very cheap! Have been quoted from €10-11.49e today.

Don't waste your time looking for a wild organic salmon!

Not wild, farmed. No chance of wild.

    Christmas is different.
Its still not a bad price for a whole fish.
Wild, you would be paying 3 digit numbers for a whole fish.

That was per kilo. I've ordered one 4-4.5kg so 45-50e.

In fact one shouldn't buy a wild one in the first place. Especially not from poachers. But really not at all.

There is nothing nice than wild salmon, sadly since the ban on drift net fishing, i haven't been able to have any. The farmed stuff, is fine, but the wild when fresh:cool:

Why do you say that? There is Legal Draft netting in place in many rivers that have fish surpluses.
These fish are sold legally, whats the problem?

Wild Salmon is out of season, if anyone is selling "fresh" it's either illegally caught or from a freezer.
During the 3ish month season wild salmon for a 2-3kg fish will be about €20kg

Organic salmon is going to be about €10kg for whole fish, afaik Clare Island is the only brand really available down south. Glenarm is a better product but hard to source down here. Someone said €8kg, that'd be the wholesale price on a 650kg pallet alright, or someone selling you farmed Norwegian as organic...
Would 90% of people really know the difference between salmon unless you had them both side by side for a taste testing?

Wild v's Farmed..... (I know it's harder to tell after smoking but shows what people are getting away with)

Regarded as probably the worlds best farmed salmon, gets sent all over the world to places like The French Laundry so you know it has to be good. It's used mainly for high end sushi in the UK and people like Ramsey and Raymond Blanc use it

I know that this thread is quite old. I'm not sure where should I ask, so please move my question to correct thread if there is one.

Where can I get fresh organic salmon in Dublin?

Good few times I purchased salmon fillet from FX Buckley butchers, but recently I bought it on Temple Bar food market (€24/1kg). The difference in meat density was very surprising, so now I'm wondering where should I look for organic salmon.
