Ok looked at cars settled for one with our trade in it will cost us 13400 buying from a small car dealer.
Two weeks ago we done deal said yes we are happy with it pending myself getting money.
    Got money.
    It's an English reg
We said we want all theplates done for us fella agreed.
However a few times he's tried to pawn us off saying you can do it yourself. We said no we don't have time we want car with vrt paid which is included in price.

We asked for service history book as it was not in car on the day as he said he takes it out of the cars as people rob them.
We have asked numerous times he has not came up with it yet.

It was booked in for vrt Monday.
I had full payment ready we were to meet him there.
Just about a half hour before vrt.
He rings to say he left without the proper paperwork for the car so he cancelled vrt.

Ok got another date it is tomorrow.

We are to meet him there.
However he's adamant that we don't come in tothe ytest centre even thou it's being registered in My name.
We have to stay in car while he goes in with my driving licence pps no etc.

    .
To this moment we still have not received proof of service history. we contacted him on numerous occasions he says yes he will e mail it.
    still nothing.
I contacted him about an hour ago he says he's very busy with cars at the moment will e mail it in 20 mins.

Like it's the week before Christmas.
I have 13400 waiting for him he is pricking around.

Does any of it sound dodgy to you? .

The only bit I think is that there is a good few extras on car and he gave us a price for a trade in and I have a feeling he may have said he give us 2500 for our old car and now realises he won't make much from sale.

    Any ideas?

Have you still got your car and have you paid a deposit?

If you don't have your car did you transfer the ownership or do you still have the VRC?

if you haven't paid yet i'd be out of there. i wouldn't want to be giving 13k of my hard earned to anyone that i didn't have a reasonable level of trust in.

if he is selling a UK car in Ireland, these are all things that should be done, almost unknown to you. you give him your details and he does the rest.

he's stalling for time on something, do you really want to find out what it is? have you done a history check on the car?

what kind of car is it btw?

No we don't have the car yet.
    It's a Peugeot 5008 2011
    66000km

It's a nice car and it probably is the best car he has for sale there
So I don't know why he isn't galloping to get vrt done with the hope of 13400 in his back pocket for christmas

    Edit
No history check as he has been telling us every day he's forwarding on service history to us. We have been put off and off by him

Did you do any kind of history check on the car yourself or were you just going to take his word on the history before handing over €13400?

Don't part with any cash until you get an independent report verifying it's history...

i'd walk away. i've no idea exactly what he's avoiding, but you have €13k to hand him and he doesn't seem to want it that bad, so for that reason alone.

either way, with any car you chose, don't rely on the service history, you should always do a private history check yourself, they are around 30 - €40 but it could save you thousands.

Take out some of that cash and do as full a history check as you can. If anything and I mean anything turns up, run a mile.

Goin to do a cartel one now.
But really we should have done it before we said we buy the car. .
I suppose we were waiting to get service history book and then do a cartel with it to compare.

But he's doin so much pricking around not giving the service history book cancelling vrt etc. That it has made us suspicious

well worth it. let us all know the results.

the service book often "goes missing" soon after the car gets clocked, to get rid of any obvious evidence of the old mileage.

at this stage personally i'd be pulling out anyway unless he had a beast of an excuse. essentially standing you up at the VRT office once, then what happened the second time? did he pay the VRT or is the car still on UK plates?

    Doesn't sound right.

Don't understand how he can miss a VRT appointment one day and get a slot the next day. Round here you would have to wait a week to get another slot.

If he is a TAN holder (revenue authorized dealer) then he needs copy of driving license, copy of utility bill header, and note from you authorizing him to register it on your behalf. He does NOT need your PPS number, and you should not give it to him.

Also don't close any deal until you see the service history.

So to answer your question in the title, yes it does seem dodgy. Looking for PPS number smells like possible tax/VAT fraud, no service history (or at least some form of documents to prove mileage, eg UK MOT cert) smells like mileage issues. It might be fine, but what are the odds ? Do you want to gamble 13400 euro ?

    OP just
+1 on running away and buying a car elsewhere

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,617 ✭✭✭ba_barabus

Sorry I'm only replying now OP but if you haven't given a deposit and you haven't traded in your car yet then RUN AWAY NOW.

T'was the week before Christmas and many dealers were eager for a last sale......;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,095 ✭✭✭Rubberchikken

It's not the only car for sale in the world.
Tbh i'd ring him and tell him you're going elsewhere.
A serious seller behaves in a professional way.

    Right o.
Cartel showed up nothing regards anything dodgy.
Apart from the fact that he told us it is a Peugeot 5008 active HDI

It turns out it's an Peugeot 5008 exclusive HDI.

    .
I received e mail of service history log book.
It has all the pages in order and each time serviced at a main Peugeot dealer+ stamped.

    However regardin the above.
I think now I know why he may be putting us off.

I looked up revenue. The vrt on an exclusive is 3200
However the vrt on an active is 2800
He obviously made a slip up. realised he will loose out and is trying to put us off as someone else may come along. . .

He originally told us that vrt is 2500. And that it is so easy to do it.
He tried to push it on us a few times.
We said no way he is to do vrt.
    .

    So will we walk now!

    Edit.
Looking at log book now it has exclusive on it too.

I would want to see the real book and then ring the garge doing the servicing and ask did they actually do it.

    Aye.

I've been presented with a logbook before which appeared to verify mileage. I ran the garage on it and gave them the VIN and Reg number and they said they never serviced it before. They went on to explain they had been broken into over 12 month ago and stamps were one of the things taken.

Check EVERYTHING. The seller could indeed be genuine but with cars I refuse to trust anyone now.

Is that €13,400 including your old car ? Or €13,400 cash and your old car on top of that ?
If it's the 2nd option you could bring in an '11 5008 easily for that amount (inc. VRT) and sell your own privately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,490 ✭✭✭monflat

Ok it's last service was with desira Peugeot
    Bury St edmonds suffock.
So do I buzz themoment first thing and ask did they service this quoting vin no and reg?

Do they have to give you this info?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭toyotaavensis

If it is a main dealer they will tell you.

Thanks yes it's 13400 and my car on top of that.
    It's a 04 1.9 diesel audi.
210 000 miles I'd say it would be terrible hard to shift!

There was a guy in Listowel had a yard full of UK plates. The numbers he was spouting that I would have to pay to get them registered were wildly below what they should have been. He actually had a Kia Sedona commercial with seats in the back and chipboard behind them and told me that the car need only be registered and taxed as a commercial. I hope your deal works out. The Peugeot is a nice car!

Would run a mile. It smells. Docs can 'be photoshopped' equivalent, very professionally doctored.etc. has he his own premesis and how long is he in the business. Is he one of these pop- up shops that's gone when the going gets tough. If buying make sure the swap over is not done in the proverbial abandoned carpark

Walk away. Don't meet , don't call. You are about to be relieved of your hard earned cash. You know its dodgy. Read your own post again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭eisen1968

I think he's trying to string this out until the new year, when the VRT will be hundreds of euro less, or try to get you cheesed off so he can get a better price elsewhere for what he now realises is a higher spec car.
